I’d Like to Check Out a Different Book, Please

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

May 27, 2024 by jeverett15 3 Comments

This book is so tedious I almost can’t be bothered. The Midnight Library follows Nora Seed, an Englishwoman with a rather nondescript life who’s fallen on hard times, both emotionally and financially. After a particularly rough day, she decides she would rather no longer be alive. She comes to in some sort of (god, this is annoying) celestial library, staffed by her favorite school librarian. Nora is told that she has been granted the opportunity to explore other possible lives, lives where she made different […]

No Waves of Grain

Darker than Amber by John D. Macdonald

May 25, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Travis McGee and his trusted friend Meyer are fishing in a secluded location late one night when a car stops on the bridge overhead. Next thing they know a woman wearing cement shoes is thrown into the water and sinks to the bottom. Acting quickly, McGee is just barely able to get her out alive. Once she’s recovered from the shock, she tells them the shocking story. A beautiful young woman, Evangeline (“Vangie” to her friends) has been a prostitute since she was a teenager, […]

Who Gets the Last Word?

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

May 22, 2024 by jeverett15 1 Comment

Since it’s publication in 2019, Alex Michaelides’s The Silent Patient has sold over 6.5 million copies. I cannot for the life of me fathom why. Usually, when I read a mega-bestseller I can understand the appeal even if I don’t particularly like it. For instance, I absolutely despised Where the Crawdads Sing, but it did have readable prose and propulsive momentum that kept me reading right up until its damnable conclusion. It also had an unusual character at its center, someone who intrigued the reader […]

Who is Bella Baxter?

Poor Things by Alasdair Gray

May 19, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

My father has always insisted that people only say “the book was better than the movie” because they read the book first. In his opinion, if you read the book first, then you spend the movie missing all the characters and scenes they’ve had to cut for time. However, if you’d watched the movie first, then while you reading the book you’d find yourself annoyed by all the superfluous material that’s clearly not needed since it didn’t make the film version. Whether my father’s theory […]

Completely Conceivable Tales

As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of the Princess Bride by Cary Elwes, with Joe Layden

May 14, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Though not particularly a box-office success upon its release, the 1987 movie The Princess Bride has become a beloved classic. Cary Elwes, who starred as Westley in the film, is quite upfront about the fact that, despite a long career in Hollywood, The Princess Bride overshadows all his other roles. Rather than be bitter about that fact, Elwes has embraced it, and in As You Wish, he has written a charming memoir of the making of the film that will delight fans. Movie fans looking […]

Taking Umbridge

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling

May 13, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

In the aftermath of his battle with Voldemort at the end of the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Harry Potter spends his annual summer with the Dursleys more depressed than ever. Dumbledore has insisted he return to Privet Drive and take no action to combat the Dark Lord. Even worse, his best friends Ron and Hermione have gone incommunicado, leaving him totally disconnected from the wizarding world. Until one night, dementors attack Harry and his cousin Dudley, forcing him to use magic to fend them off and exposing […]
