The Expendable Man by Dorothy B. Hughes

July 16, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Dorothy B. Hughes is one of those writer’s writer types that readers get too after they’ve read the noir novels everyone has heard of and are desperate for more. With classics like In a Lonely Place and Ride the Pink Horse to her name, she is deserving of a place in the upper echelon. The Expendable Man is another plank in that argument. Hugh Densmore is a young doctor driving from L.A. to Phoenix for his sister’s wedding. Phoenix is his hometown, and his whole […]

What the H?

H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald

July 15, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Recently named one of the 100 Best Books of the 21st Century by the New York Times, Helen Macdonald’s H is for Hawk covers one year in the author’s life. After the death of her father, Helen purchases and trains a goshawk to give her something to focus on in her grief. While recounting that process, she also diverges into discussions about the life of the author T.H. White, who in addition to writing The Once and Future King, was also a falconer. I listened […]

The Man Behind the Muppets

Jim Henson: The Biography by Brian Jay Jones

July 9, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

For someone my age, the Muppets have always just been around, an integral part of the cultural fabric of America. It could at times be hard to conceive of a time before Kermit and Miss Piggy, except of course for the fact that even as a little kid I knew the name of the man who was responsible for all of it. Jim Henson is rightly synonymous with his creations, even, as this comprehensive account of his life demonstrates, he was and wanted to be […]

Alice? Alice? Who the F*** is Alice?

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

July 5, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

The Alice Network follows parallel narratives surrounding women and war. In 1947, Charlie St. Clair is a promising young woman: bright, well-educated, and the daughter of wealthy parents. But the toll of the recently-ended war has thrown Charlie off-kilter, leaving her in danger of becoming a disgrace to her family. Nineteen and pregnant, she’s on a trip with her mother to “take care of her little problem” and return to the life her parents have planned for her. But Charlie has another idea: tracking down […]

King’s Dozen

You Like It Darker by Stephen King

June 28, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

You Like It Darker is a collection of twelve short stories by horror master Stephen King. Five of the stories are being published for the first time, while the other seven previously ran in magazines or on King’s websites. All twelve stories were new to me. The collection’s title would seem to indicate that King has ratcheted up his penchant for the macabre, but if anything I thought he used an ironically light touch for most of the twelve stories. Though there are of course […]

The Heroes’ Journey Comes to an End

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

June 17, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Everything feels different in this, the seventh and final book of the Harry Potter series. That’s as expected in the aftermath of the sixth book’s devastating conclusion. Having lost his beloved mentor Dumbledore, Harry has made the decision to forgo his last year at Hogwarts and undertake the mission given to him by his departed headmaster: to destroy the Horcruxes containing the pieces of Lord Voldemort’s soul in order to destroy Voldemort himself. Accompanied on his quest by Hermione and Ron, Harry sets out without […]
