Unruly: The Ridiculous History of England's Kings and Queens by David Mitchell

October 22, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

David Mitchell (the comedian, not the author of Cloud Atlas) takes readers on a walking tour through the history of England’s monarchy, up to around the start of the 17th century. Or maybe I should stay running tour. Covering hundreds of years of history in this few pages of course means that there isn’t a lot of time to devote to any particular ruler or era. Thus, I wouldn’t say that Unruly makes for a good read for anyone actually looking for a serious history […]

The Song that Never Ends

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes: A Hunger Games Novel by Suzanne Collins

October 13, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

I read the original Hunger Games trilogy around the time the movies were coming out, because sometimes I like to keep an eye on what’s popular. I remember enjoying the first book, then enjoying the second book less, and then not enjoying the third book at all. The third book was tedious, repetitive and dull, in my opinion. Unfortunately, that downward trend has only continued into Suzanne Collins’s prequel novel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Set decades before the events of the original trilogy, […]

Jason Dessen is a physics professor at a low-level university, living in Chicago with his art teacher wife Daniela and their teenage son Charlie. Jason and Daniela had high hopes for their careers once upon a time, but an unplanned pregnancy knocked them a bit off course. Now, they have a happy home life that is just a bit tinged with regret for what might have been. One night Jason reluctantly heads out to a bar to congratulate an old friend for winning a prestigious […]

The Eighth Time’s the Charm

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Tuurton

October 3, 2024 by jeverett15 2 Comments

First, I’d like to say that I think it’s hysterical that this book had to add the “1/2” to the title to avoid confusion with Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. What a coincidence. Second, and more crucially to this review, I listened to this on audiobook, so this review should really only be considered accurate to that version. I had some major issues with the narration, and I can’t be sure they didn’t totally alter my opinion of the novel. With […]

The New Gang in Town

We Solve Murders by Richard Osman

October 3, 2024 by jeverett15 1 Comment

Recently, I had the chance to listen to Richard Osman give a talk at a local bookstore about his new novel We Solve Murders. The book also marks the launch of a new series for Osman, as he (temporarily, he assures us) puts aside the Thursday Murder Club. One of the themes Osman constantly returned to was that, to him, character is much more important than the plot to a mystery novel’s success. Indeed, unlike many mystery writers, Osman swears he has no solution in […]

Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar

September 25, 2024 by jeverett15 1 Comment

Cyrus Shams has been adrift for years. Born in Iran, he lost his mother very early when her plane was shot down by mistake by a U.S. Navy warship. (This really happened. Look up Iran Air Flight 655 for more information.) His father took Cyrus to Indiana, of all places, where he worked himself to death on a chicken farm before Cyrus had finished college. In 2017, Cyrus has sobered up and finally graduated, but he’s still hanging around his college town, bumming around at […]
