I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. This Has All Happened Before and It Will All Happen Again

March 8, 2018 by Jen K 2 Comments

I loved the original three books of The Red Rising Saga so I was very excited when I saw that Pierce Brown had written a fourth novel to add to the series.  And yet, despite pre-ordering it, I was hesitant to start reading it. While a revolution and complete upheaval of the social order will naturally lead to growing pains, sometimes it’s better to hope the heroes figured it out rather than go back and see how much has gone wrong.  As fun as The […]

A Way Too Heavy and Analytical Take on A Light Sci-Fi Novel

March 8, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I am not sure what it is with me but I tend to take light sci-fi novels and view them in a much darker than intended way.  And sci-fi novels are intended to be dark are depressingly bleak (Three Body Problem trilogy, looking at you here!). While everyone else was enjoying the ride of Ready Player One, my response was: “they’ve basically destroyed the environment, life is miserable, and the novel’s focus is on winning a video game. I mean I get it as a […]

A True Crime Book and a Husband’s Tribute

March 8, 2018 by Jen K 12 Comments

I don’t usually read true crime – I remember reading a book in middle school which was basically an encyclopedia of famous serial killers but it wasn’t a subject matter that hooked me.  It might because it feels like the focus can too easily be on the serial killer to the detriment of the victims, and it can easily be forgotten that the victims were real living humans with lives and potential and not fictional characters.  I’ve read Capote’s In Cold Blood but that was […]

Old Money, Twelfth Night and Murder

March 8, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Though I’ve read the entirety of the Pink Carnation series, this was my first time trying any of Willig’s other work, and while her voice was recognizable, it had a very different feel.  While the Pink Carnation series certainly deals with dark subject matters (espionage, war, murder, and secret societies), especially the first few novels in the series were very light hearted.  As a result, I was surprised by how much darker and more serious this one felt in comparison. While at her brother Bay’s […]

Romance Novel or LA and SF food recommendation book?

March 4, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I think I have been reading or watching too many romances where the couple falls in love and resolves everything in a short amount of time, so based on the title, I honestly thought this novel might take place over a wedding weekend but Guillory uses the wedding date as a launching point. The novel kicks off with the meet cute right away – Alexa gets stuck on an elevator on her way to see her older sister, but fortunately she has celebratory cheese in […]

Decent Historical Fiction Novel Bogged Down by a Horrible Narrator

March 4, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This one is a bit frustrating because there were certainly things I liked about this novel, other things where I liked the concept more than the execution, and then the parts that just made this a difficult read to get through – which actually is rather closely related to the concept that could have worked with a slightly different execution. Having finally been swept up in the Hamilton craze, the Hamilton bio still feels rather daunting so I decided to start with this historical fiction […]
