I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Fantastical creatures, secret societies, and Greek mythology references – yes, please!

I basically blew through all seven novels of this series in four days.  Fortunately, it is recent enough that I am still able to keep the plot lines very distinct but extra details about the family history and the family tree are added as the series progresses so I can’t get too far into some of the background because I can’t quite remember at what point certain concepts are introduced. Verity Price is the middle daughter of the latest generation of the Price family.  The […]

A Harsh View of the West, Unblemished by Romanticism

March 28, 2018 by Jen K 1 Comment

I have been vaguely intending to read this novel for quite a while but I always ended up prioritizing other books, especially since I didn’t actually already have it in my TBR pile.  I’ve noticed a few Cannonballers mention the Bookriot Read Harder Challenge and since I’d already read a few books that fit into the various categories, I thought it might be fun to participate, and it also provided a push to finally pick up Lonesome Dove to meet the Western requirement. I was, […]

Gryphons and Dragons and More, Oh My!

March 28, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Obviously, I am on a dragon kick this year, at least book-wise. Beyond that, dragons are always awesome. Just ask my dining room decor. After seeing yesknopemaybe’s review of Heartstone, I decided to check it out even though I am not always the biggest fan of Pride and Prejudice re-imaginings (the other dragon series I read this year also had a little Pride and Prejudice inspired short story!).  I think my ambivalence about P&P retellings is actually more because the original isn’t my favorite Austen […]

More Than Just a Gender Swapping – The Novel is Filled With Interesting Women

March 19, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have never actually read an original Sherlock Holmes novel or story.  I think we read a children’s version of The Hound of Baskerville at one point but it was definitely a simplified version since it was in 6th grade, during our second year of English language instruction at my German school (I of course was already fluent but it’s not like there was an alternative course I could have taken so it made more sense for me to just be in the class with […]

Oh Please Tell Me More About Your TODO list …

March 19, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

The second Bobiverse novel takes off where the other one left off, but felt less fun.  I don’t think it was necessarily less light-hearted but how entertaining this one is basically all depends on how entertaining Bob is to the reader – I don’t dislike Bob, but he also isn’t anywhere in my top ten of people I would like to clone and take over the world so I was ready for some other voices. It’s weird, I feel like one novel told from one […]

But Is It a Book I’ll Remember?

March 19, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed the first novel in the A Season for Scandal series even if I quickly forgot the name of the author and the novel until I saw a recent review by Malin for the novella. With that reminder, I was finally able to discover the additional novels in the series, and jump back in. Elise deVries was introduced in the previous novel as one of the partners of Chegarre and Associates, a private agency to help the rich deal with their problems discreetly […]
