I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. A whole nation that never learned, “don’t bargain with the fae”

The Rose Bargain by Sasha Peyton Smith

August 25, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This was our July book club choice – one of the club members pays more attention to TikTok and BookTok trends so she mentioned this as one that’s been gaining attention. I’m old so I don’t purposely follow booktok but see the occasional reel on IG or Facebook. I think this was kind of a quintessential summer read – entertaining while you are reading it, nothing groundbreaking and if you remember the book exists in a year, you’ll totally get the sequel but also won’t […]

Catching up with the Ravenels

Hello Stranger by Lisa Kleypas

Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas

August 25, 2025 by Jen K 5 Comments

When I first started getting into romance about 10 years ago (it was during a deployment when I also transitioned to being primarily an ebook reader), Lisa Kleypas, Tessa Dare, Courtney Milan and Sarah MacLean were my entry authors (have to start high – also, thanks, Malin). Sarah MacLean at some point stopped being an auto-buy for me because her characters always felt so angsty, Tessa Dare has unfortunately not published anything in a while and somehow I fell behind on Lisa Kleypas with her […]

Well, this was a bait and switch

The Summer We Ran by Audrey Ingram

August 24, 2025 by Jen K 1 Comment

So … this was a book club choice and not something I normally would have stumbled on myself but when we were plotting out our next few months of reads, we were very much thinking summer reads, romance etc and someone had heard about this one and mentioned that it involved political opponents. Then, after we’d made the decision, I read the synopsis (secret shared past), I was like, “oh, this sounds a bit more women’s fiction than romance but could be interesting.” And it […]

When the skeptic becomes borderline unlikable

I’ll Be Waiting by Kelley Armstrong

August 24, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Border (with seances and Ouija boards, it’s the boundaries/borders between life and the afterlife/supernatural) This one was a bit of a miss for me for Kelley Armstrong – I really loved her Women of the Otherworld series, and in general, her other novels, whether supernatural or romance, tend to work for me. This specific novel is one of the supernatural/paranormal ones – the main character and narrator is Nic, a new widow after her husband Anton died in a car crash less than […]

We’re all just animals after all

Shark Heart by Emily Habeck

August 5, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Rec’d (Colormeloverly raved about this novel repeatedly last year on IG) Definitely not my usual kind of novel nowadays – I don’t venture into literary fiction all too often anymore but if they were all like this, I might. Shortly after their wedding, Lewis notices some odd changes in his body, and after consultation, he is diagnosed with an animal mutation: he is transforming into a great white shark, and has less than a year before his transformation will be complete and he […]

But could I have some of the cake?

The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst

August 3, 2025 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square: Purple (maybe I am colorblind but it feels like there is purple filter overlaying this or something) This was fine. Sometimes I can’t tell whether it’s my mood specifically when it comes to cozy fantasy or if it is the book but it’s a bit of a hit or miss genre for me. It’s hard to find that right balance between creating a world that feels cozy but also has just enough of a hook or plot to keep the reader engaged. This […]
