I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Dependable, violent fun from Ilona Andrews

The Inheritance by Ilona Andrews

October 2, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: I If you pay attention to the writing duo/married couple behind the pen name Ilona Andrews, you know that they every once in a while publish serialized stories on their website/blog, and often these intended short stories turn into novellas or full novels. Apparently, half of them are also aware of this while one still thinks they really could keep it to a short story. If you enjoy Ilona Andrews, you’ll see a lot of types that reoccur throughout their fiction – highly […]

What if we skipped the shadow daddy trope and just went with the shadow

Thief of Night by Holly Black

October 2, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

It’s been over 3 years since the first novel in this duology came out so common sense would imply that I would have reread Book of Night before jumping into this but no, of course not. I vaguely remembered some of the bigger points and twists (although I also slightly blended one idea with a concept from a different book) but Black did a good job of mixing in enough reminders and context throughout the novel to guide the reader without just giving a plot […]

Tough read for animal lovers

The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones

September 9, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: O I don’t really consider myself a huge horror reader – I know I definitely read more horror than I watch and yet, when I finished this book, thinking, “this isn’t the horror I normally read,” I also couldn’t think of what I would consider “normal for me” horror. I have read a decent amount of ghost stories and vampire novels but my brain classifies those as supernatural or ghost and vampire stories vs. categories them under the horror label. I’ve read a […]

That which we call a rose

The Names by Florence Knapp

September 8, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I’m a sucker for a Sliding Doors kind of story – Lionel Shriver’s The Post Birthday World, Kristin Cashore Jane, Unlimited … – I just enjoy seeing how the author envisions people having completely different relationships based on one decision. Sometimes, there is a sense of poignancy and sadness as a reader as we know things the characters never will, we see how people that could have been best friends in one life are barely passing strangers, seeing a loss the characters never even realize […]

From Prison Cell to Royal Courts

The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni

The Gilded Cage by Lynette Noni

The Blood Traitor by Lynette Noni

August 29, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Red (mostly The Gilded Cage but all have shades or hints of reds) I kept seeing this on book reels that randomly show up on my FB and IG accounts – it was one of those books that gets talked about but also isn’t so wildly popular that it’s off-putting. Just enough mentions here and there that it eventually stuck in my head. Overall, I think it’s a decent YA trilogy but like so many others, the beginning seems to be setting up […]

Crime podcasts, grandmas and small town Texas

Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera

August 27, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Review I saw Malin’s review of this a few weeks ago and picked it up because I enjoy a good mystery novel. Lucy left her home town Texas five years ago and hasn’t been back since, settling in LA. Her best friend Savvy (Savannah) was murdered back then, and everyone suspected Lucy. Hell, even Lucy occasionally suspects Lucy but she doesn’t remember that night. She isn’t exactly living the most fulfilling life but she is surviving except now she’s about to have to […]
