I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Stands up as allegory, less so as a novel

Bingo Square: Fahrenheit 451 Since I switched school districts (and states) between 9th and 10th grade, I ended up reading Lord of the Flies twice in high school English class.  And I despised it both times. Despite that, I noticed at some point that it is a novel I refer to more than some novels I actually enjoyed in school so I had been meaning to do a reread for a while.  After I chose it for the Fahrenheit 451 square, I realized it could […]

Life, Messy and Unfiltered

September 26, 2018 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square: The Book Was Better While I never became a huge Nick Hornby fan, I have enjoyed a few of his novels and adaptations of his novels (I quite like the ABC show About a Boy with Minnie Driver – between that show and Speechless, Minnie Driver has found her niche as overprotective sitcom mother, and I love it).  But he’s never been a go to author for me, so I tend to read his stuff after I realize another piece is being adapted. […]

The King Arthur Legend Grounded in Historical Reality

September 25, 2018 by Jen K 2 Comments

Bingo Square: Throwback Thursday I originally read this novel, and the rest of the trilogy it belongs to, over a decade ago when I was in Iraq.  It was a gift from the same friend that turned to me onto A Game of Thrones, and I had fond memories of this take on the Arthurian legend that mostly attempts to be grounded in reality. As a historical fiction nerd, I can definitely see why this approach appealed to me, especially since it leaned heavily on […]

Potentially Interesting Collection Diminished by Bad Choices on Part of the Reader

August 29, 2018 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square: Birthday This was a very frustrating read for me, and it is entirely due to the fact that I chose the wrong platform to enjoy this book.  When I popped up as a daily deal in Audible, I jumped at it with little analysis because I have always thought I need to read more Ursula K. LeGuin.  I vaguely knew it was an essay collection and thought it would be interesting to hear her thoughts on various subjects.  The problem is that it […]

So Very, Very Shiny! Also, Triple!

August 28, 2018 by Jen K 12 Comments

Bingo Square: So Shiny One good thing about being on the West Coast for work: my Kate Daniels pre-order was delivered to my Kindle account at 12 AM EST, which was 9 pm PST.  I was still up at that point, and immediately dropped the other book I was reading (it’s alright, it was for the TBT square so it’s not like I don’t know how it’s going to end) and dived into Magic Triumphs! So first off, Conlan, Curran and Kate’s son, is adorable!  […]

I Kind of Hate the Whole Concept Behind the Phrase “Mama Bear”

August 28, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is the final novel of the Queens of Renthia trilogy though Durst mentioned she was writing a stand-alone novel about one of the other three kingdoms not explored as thoroughly as Aratay and Semo.  Overall, I quite liked where Durst went with the story, and while in some ways, she followed some of the expected solutions, in other ways, she very much went against conventions, leading to a conclusion that contained elements I expected and others that I did not. After mostly being discussed […]
