I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Damn! All the Answers I Wanted, and an Ending That Fits Perfectly with the Tone of the Series

Bingo Square (Round 2): This is the End In this final Hugo Award winning novel of The Broken Earth trilogy, Jemisin finally takes us back to the Shattering, the beginning of the Seasons and explains exactly how the world as Essun and Nassun know it came into being. There have already been many reviews singing the praises of this trilogy so I am going to keep it short and basic. Hoa has been the narrator throughout the trilogy but in this one, he finally narrates his […]

Be a Jukebox Hero, Got Stars in His Eyes

Bingo Square (Round 2): Center/Free Space I was originally going to use this as my brain candy spot, but it didn’t quite fit that category for me.  There was just a bit too much going on in the first few chapters for it to be pure fluff, and required more attention than my tired brain was expecting.  There are absolutely absurd and hilarious moments, but with all the details of the all different parts of the galaxies, it also demands slightly more reader attention than […]

Come for the Magic, Stay for the Dragon and Bog Monster

Bingo Square (Round 2): Award Winner (Newbery Medal) While I picked this novel up because of bothari43’s review (and cat picture), I’m using it for the Award Winner category. Overall, the tone reminded me quite a bit of Terry Pratchett aimed at a younger audience. I’ve only read two Pratchett novels so others more familiar with his work may not agree with that assessment but it certainly felt like that to me. I just felt like Xan, Glerk, Fyrian, Antain (and his uncle), and Luna […]

Taking a “Dark Take” on a Children’s Classic to the Extreme

October 13, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square (Round 2): And So It Begins I am not sure why I keep trying adaptations of Alice in Wonderland.  I didn’t have enough of a connection to the original story or movie as a child to get all the references.  It was the one Disney movie that scared the hell out of me as a child, and which I refused to re-watch (or my parents never showed again, not wanting to deal with the aftermath).  I was less than enthralled with Splintered (though I […]

Faeries and Courts and Sirens – A Familiar Story Competently Written

October 13, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square (Round 2): Brain Candy After reading Pestilence, I was curious about what else the author had written, and stumbled upon this first novel in a series on Kindle Unlimited.  It’s both interesting and slightly more generic – what is it with faeries and wings as erogenous zones? It seems like every time a novel has a bad boy fae ruler with wings, the wings are described as sensitive in a sexual manner.  I didn’t realize this many women had a wing fetish.  Since I love the Court of […]

Which of Your Lost Items Still Cause a Tinge of Regret?

October 13, 2018 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square (Round 2): Cannonballer Says! I thought Caitlin_D’s review was intriguing, and as much as I love fantasy, it’s been nice to incorporate some contemporary fiction back into my reading.  Oddly enough, this is the second novel I’ve read this year with short stories interlaced into the narrative, the other being Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows. Over forty years ago, Anthony’s fiancé died unexpectedly, and on the same day that Anthony lost Therese, he lost a final gift and keepsake she had given him […]
