I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Revenge Killing or Just Another White Guy Killing His Family as A Result of Economic Despair?

The Dry by Jane Harper

July 27, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Far and Away I wish I had been more creative with this square and done something other than physical distance but I was in the mood for a murder mystery, and Australia is definitely one of those places I have never been close enough to seriously considering visiting.  Throw in rural Australia, and it’s even farther away. After twenty years away from his home town, Aaron Falk is back.  Tragedy forced him out of town, and tragedy has brought him back. Twenty years […]

The True Story of Supergirl’s Nia Nal Actress

Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family by Amy Ellis Nutt

July 27, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: True Story Around the beginning of the fourth season of Supergirl, Dustin Rowles wrote an article on Pajiba about his neighbor and how their daughter had been cast as the first transgender superhero on the show.  I fell behind on Supergirl this season – the overall storyline was interesting but they were spending way too much time on a boring side plot with the Guardian/Jimmy Olsen.  I don’t dislike Jimmy Olsen but I think he is one of the characters the show has […]

Meh approach to a decent concept

Ophelia by Lisa Klein

July 27, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Remix I was a bit hesitant when this showed up as one of my Kindle Deals but was seduced by the “Now a Major Motion Picture” sentence on the cover, especially when I realized that Daisy Ridley was the one playing Ophelia.  Personally, I’ve always thought it would be fun to write/read a novel in which Juliet had not died and instead survived the double suicide to go on to have a successful and happy life.  Ophelia, unfortunately, never captured my imagination that […]

Space Road Trip!

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

July 27, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Travel It took me forever and more positive reviews than I can cite but I finally read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.  I generally read more fantasy than sci-fi but I’ve been overdoing the fantasy lately, and needed to switch things up.  And what better than CBR11 Book Bingo to inspire actual reviewing! I know as long as the review is written between 1 July and 31 October, it counts, but considering that I’ve only reviewed one whole book this […]

“I’ve Been Expelled From Heaven, I Think I was In Heaven”

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

February 4, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

I’m not sure if I have been in a book slump or of my mind hasn’t been able to focus due to all the things going on at work at the beginning of the year, or if it was inability to find a book that could hold my attention.  It was probably a hybrid of the two, since I’m still in a very picky mood about books, but count on Seanan McGuire, a true and tried favorite, to get me out of my slump. I’m rather late getting to […]

About the reaction you would accept from a book with a character who is simply the other one in the title

The Other Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

December 31, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I love Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series, and have also mostly enjoyed the spin offs even if they are comparatively unmemorable when put against the original series, so this was a pre-order for me.  And it’s not that this one was bad, I liked Andrew, and Poppy was nice, but there wasn’t much spark for me on this one. I actually thought it was me and that I was in a reading slump (which I think I kind of am), but when I asked about it […]
