I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad … Detective?

Fables: Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham

Bingo Square: Illustrated I admit, I’d been kind of holding off on the Illustrated category because if it hadn’t been its own square, graphic novels could have easily been my “Not in My Wheelhouse” square.  I figured I’d probably do one of the ones dealing with issues, like Persepolis or Maus, but after Behold the Dreamers, I needed a nice, entertaining read as a palate cleanser.  The two graphic novel series that have stuck in my head after countless positive CBR reviews were Fables and […]

Can’t Believe It Took Me This Long To Pick This One Up

The Girl of Fire and Thorn by Rae Carson

July 31, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square: And So It Begins I remember reading multiple positive reviews of this years ago, and yet I somehow never quite got around to it.  I think when it originally came out, I was reading YA but I was trying not to overindulge in it, and it wasn’t one that people continued to talk about even years later like the Lainie Taylor novels or Lunar Chronicles or others. And really, this novel was quite good so I am glad I finally added it to […]

There’s an Important Story and Message Hidden Somewhere in This Thing

Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue

July 31, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Own Voices I’d been debating between this and Everything I Never Told You for this category but since I had just read The Bride Test, which was about an Vietnamese-American family and am thinking about reading a book about a Chinese family for my “Back to School” read, I figured I should diversify instead of reading about a Chinese-American family for this.  Imbolo Mbue is originally from Cameroon and has lived in the United States for ten years, and her novel follows a […]

Why Is It Always So Hard to Review the Great Ones?

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie

July 31, 2019 by Jen K 3 Comments

Bingo Square: Award Winner I’ve been meaning to read this novel for quite a while now, but BR 11 Bingo was the final push to get me to start it.  I like sci-fi, but some sci-fi can become a bit dry and too technical for me to enjoy, and I feared this might be one of them.  As it turns out, I should not have been concerned about that at all. I also started reading Becky Chambers’ novels recently, so it was interesting to read […]

Love of Reading Gone Wrong

Finders Keepers by Stephen King

July 31, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Birthday (Stephen King’s birthday is 21 September) Even though I quite liked Mr. Mercedes, I can’t say I was that interested in more novels with the characters.  Based on who had and hadn’t survived in Mr. Mercedes, I felt like it ended well as it was, and I didn’t necessarily want to continue reading more about some of the characters without others also being around. However, I still ended up downloading the two other novels in the trilogy when I was granted a […]

Sometimes People Do Get Their Just Desserts

Who Slays the Wicked by C.S. Harris

July 31, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: I Love This I read all the thirteen existing books of the Sebastian St. Cyr series last year as part of the Cannonball Read 10, so I think the latest book in the series makes for a good fit in the “I Love This” category.  Between my deployment and lack of free time (or at least “on my own” time, I was oddly social in Kuwait, even if that simply meant hanging out at work, going to the gym after work with co-workers […]
