I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. A Sequel That Is Even Better Than The First Novel

Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

August 22, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy is the series that got me hooked on YA.  So many people had talked about it that I finally picked it up, and was completely blown away (I mean I had obviously read The Hunger Games but this was definitely part of my shift from the occasional YA to heavy rotation of YA). And yet, I have never reread them because what if I don’t like them as much?  I was very excited when I realized she […]

DNA and Genes Broken Down

The Violinist's Thumb by Sam Kean

August 5, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Science! I quite enjoyed Same Kean’s previous book, The Disappearing Spoon, so I am not entirely sure why it took me so long to get around to reading this – The Violinist’s Thumb was published in summer 2012 and I have a hardcover, so I’ve obviously had it for a while.  I will say, at least part of the blame goes to the fact that around 2014/2015 I transitioned to primarily reading Kindle books so it hasn’t helped diminish the stack of physical […]

I Can Always Use A New Urban Fantasy Series

Grave Witch by Kalayna Price

August 5, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

After I saw teresaelectro’s review of the first three novels in the series, I figured this would be right up my lane.  Despite that I was rather pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this initial entry.  Even some of my favorite urban fantasy series have struggled to find their footing in the first novel, not really hitting their stride till book two or three, such as the Kate Daniels series and even the October Daye series.  While I know there is much more to […]

Well, I Didn’t See That Coming

A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

August 5, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Classic The closest I had ever come to reading an actual Sherlock Holmes novel was a young readers’ version of The Hound of the Baskervilles more than two and half decades ago.  Since then, it’s been mostly adaptations like the Mary Russell mystery novels, the Guy Ritchie movies, and of course, the more recent Lady Sherlock novels.  The first two of those deal with Sherlock Holmes later in life, with the Holmes-Watson relationship already established, so I was surprised that the two men […]

Famous Last Words

Looking for Alaska by John Green

August 5, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Banned Books There are a few categories on the Bingo board that have looked slightly more homework like to me than others, and I had the feeling Banned Books was going to be one of them.  Fortunately for me, the Top Ten Most Challenged lists of books contain quite a few modern YA novels because of course teachers would want to include current novels to appeal to their students. I had already read a few of them, and some of the choices were […]

“Every Love Story is a Ghost Story”

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley

August 1, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Cannonballer Says Caitlin_D posted her review of Words in Deep Blue a few days before I got on the Cannonball Read site in late June for some book inspiration.  I hadn’t exactly been paying much attention to new releases, so I quickly ended up discovering that some previously enjoyed authors had new novels out which were promptly added to the cart.  Between the review, the title and the cover, something about this novel appealed to me, so it too made the cut (I […]
