I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Time for the Little Sister

Heroine's Journey by Sarah Kuhn

August 24, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I read the first two novels in this trilogy last year and really enjoyed them.  They have a very comic book feel, focusing on romantic heroines with superpowers.  Many of the scenes are ridiculously over the top but entertaining (such as possessed wedding dresses and armies of angry brides).  This novel is set a few years after the original two which took place within a short amount of each other.  This is due to the fact that this novel follows Bea Tanaka, the younger sister […]

Jack and Jill Went Up the Hill

Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire

August 24, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is the second novella in the Wayward Children series, and I was slightly surprised with the topic. The first novella was about a boarding school for children who return from magical worlds reached by cupboards and secret passages, and are having trouble adjusting to life back home because they want to go back.  I expected that the second novella would be more adventures at the boarding school, or possibly explore the idea of other schools.  After all, this is for children that want to […]

When Jane Austen Finds a New Use for Her Skill Set

Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron

August 24, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

During the Facebook portion of the Sherlock Holmes book club discussion, we went on a tangent discussing historical mystery series, and one of the recommendations that came up was the Jane Austen mysteries.  Based on mutual like of other series, I decided to give it a shot. Overall, it was a delightful novel, and I think the author did an admirable job of using Jane Austen in a respectful manner in this first novel.  I recognized a few turns of phrases that were direct nods […]

Definitely A Product of Its Time

Pet Sematary by Stephen King

August 23, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I read this shortly before the movie came out although I didn’t end up seeing the movie.  I like the idea of horror, and I enjoy reading it on occasion, but I don’t like watching it that much.  I used to, but at some point, I decided I didn’t like jump scares, and haven’t really watched much horror since.  I did see Get Out, but it was at home and during the day. The thing is the story itself is intriguing and I can absolutely […]

Dating and Food in LA

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

August 23, 2019 by Jen K 2 Comments

I was trying to remember my reactions to this novel, and then started wondering if I had already reviewed this.  As it turns out, certain parts of my reaction to this novel were similar to my reactions to The Bride Test, which was also a follow on to a very popular and widely discussed romance novel. After Nik’s casual boyfriend (she’s mostly just using him for sex because he’s pretty) decides to publicly propose to her at a Dodgers game, she is in a bit […]

Unfortunately, This Was Too Much of a Middle of the Trilogy Filler Novel

Archenemies by Marissa Meyer

August 23, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I might be remembering incorrectly, but I feel like the first novel in this new series, Renegades, had somewhat mixed reviews.  I actually enjoyed it because I enjoy super hero stories (just because Brandon Sanderson’s Steelheart trilogy exists and is amazing, doesn’t mean there isn’t space to explore other stories like this). Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about Archenemies. Renegades included a lot of set up mixed with plot development and action as well as an amazing reveal at the end.  With that, I […]
