I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran

September 4, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I’ve had this novel on my Kindle for ages! I have enjoyed all the Duran romances I’ve read but some of them can get intense, and a romance novel set in India during the mutinies?  That topic definitely has the potential to get dark, and the fact that the novel opens on a shipwreck certainly means this is not going to be a light comedic romance. Emmaline Martin and her parents were on the way to British occupied India for Emma’s wedding.  She has been […]

Revisiting the Early Novels of a Long Running Series

An Artificial Night by Seanan McGuire

Late Eclipses by Seanan McGuire

September 4, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

While the October Daye series didn’t start clicking for me until the third book, it has since become one of my favorite urban fantasy series.  I love the expansive world building and even thirteen books in, the series keeps growing without conflicting with itself.  I don’t know if McGuire always had this extended world in her head but didn’t know how much time she would have to explore it or if she is going novel to novel on the fly, but it has been such […]

One of My Favorite Books of the Year

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

August 27, 2019 by Jen K 2 Comments

This novel had been on my radar and TBR list ever since narfna’s review over a year ago.  I didn’t end up reading it till this past May because I was on a fantasy kick and wasn’t sure if I was in the mood for something more straightforward.  However, I finally hit the point where I needed to switch it up so my reading has been a bit more varied this year. I met a good friend of mine for coffee shortly after reading this […]

Still No Kids For Me, Thank You

Why Have Kids by Jessica Valenti

August 27, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I first became aware of Jessica Valenti back around undergrad when I started reading a few feminist blogs, Feministing being one of them.  Feministing was never my favorite one – it was more like reading a collection of news, reporting on lots of different things with multiple posts a day while other blogs had fewer articles but more in depth analysis of those topics. I don’t remember if Valenti stood out to me, or if she even posted that much or was more involved in […]

A Difficult Read With Some Hope

Women Talking by Miriam Toews

August 27, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I ended up pre-ordering this novel based on llp’s review of this last year.  It was published in Canada long before the Kindle version was available in the United States because I didn’t even remember what this was about by the time it downloaded onto my reader. Toews wrote this novel as a fictional reaction to the horrifying events that happened in a Mennonite community in Bolivia.  I had actually read about the rapes that had plagued the women of the community before llp’s review.  […]

A Character Study in a Suspense Novel

Since We Fell by Dennis Lehane

August 27, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

I quite enjoy Dennis Lehane’s novel; I love The Given Day, quite like his Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro mysteries, and think Mystic River was amazingly written.  He doesn’t just write good mysteries, I also enjoy the writing itself. The novel begins with a prologue which reveals to the reader that when Rachel is 35, she kills her husband by shooting him.  The novel then goes back in time and slowly shows the reader how Rachel got to that day in her life, and what […]
