I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. The Very Long Journey Portion of the Hero’s Journey

A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

October 12, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I quite enjoyed the first novel in the Ember Quartet, and was very interested to see where Tahir would take it.  Tahir adds a third character perspective, Helene, in this novel, and I enjoyed her parts of the novel most since they were focused on the politics of the Empire with the new emperor in play.  Additionally, she has the most interesting of the character issues since Helene is struggling between her loyalty to her best friend, her family and the Empire and her oath. […]

I Thought Supernatural Had Exclusive Rights to that Kansas Song by Now

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

September 28, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

It’s been almost a year since the events of Carry On, and things aren’t alright.  Agatha was so fed up with magical quests and adventures that she is attending school in San Diego and left even her wand behind.  Simon, Baz and Penelope Bunce are living together, attending university, except that Simon isn’t exactly going or leaving the couch much at all these days. How does one move on with life after accomplishing the thing one was chosen to do?  How to deal with all […]

All the Elements of Classic King

The Institute by Stephen King

September 24, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

The latest King novel has a very classic King feel given its focus on extraordinary children and evil agencies.  First, though, the novel introduces Tim Jamieson, a former Florida police officer, who is on his way to New York to start fresh with a security job.  He decides to take the scenic route, and ends up on an extended pit stop in a small town in South Carolina. He takes on a job as the night knocker for the small police department, and gets to […]

I Think That’s Enough Doyle for Me

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

September 23, 2019 by Jen K 2 Comments

Bingo Square: Back to School I had originally started reading a memoir as my “Back to School” square but despite how much I loved the book in 9th grade, after being barely 18% into the book, I simply couldn’t handle the amount of death and despair.  Given that the book covered 20th century China and it was still in the 1940s, I realized I wasn’t in the right mindset to deal with the amount of suffering that would still come given the famine and the […]

Potentially Familiar Beginning Leads to a Creative and Intriguing World

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

September 23, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

When I first started reading this, I was a bit worried that it felt derivative of other YA novels.  While it was a very different set up, something initially reminded me of Marie Lu’s Legend, though it quickly became its own separate thing.  I think it may have been that both alternate between the voice of a young woman and a young man, and in both, the woman has an older brother.  Both also deal with resistance fighters and an established empire, though the gender […]

It’s Always the Husband, Right?

The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas

September 8, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I was in the minority of people that didn’t like the second novel in this series as much as the second. I thought it got a bit more convoluted than necessary, leaving me scratching my head rather than marveling at the way everything came together in the end.  I was pleasantly surprised with the third novel, and how much I enjoyed it, and I think it’s because it stayed focused on the core characters I already liked rather than introducing a series of new people […]
