I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. My Portal to Another Land would definitely not lead to Candy Land

Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire

December 22, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

While the second Wayward Child novella delved deeper into the backstory of two characters from the first novel.  This novella, on the other hand, takes the reader back to the school grounds to meet new children trying to find their way home while also checking in on old characters. Cora and Nadya are two new characters, and they were called to magical realms where they had strong connections to water, Cora as a mermaid, and Nadya as a Drowning Girl.  As a result, it is […]

My Favorite Version of Beauty and the Beast Yet …

As Old as Time by Liz Braswell

December 21, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Given my love of reading, it always felt like I should like Belle and Beauty and the Beast much more than I did.  Maybe it was timing, since I saw it when I had started transitioning to life action mostly and didn’t want to watch kids’ stuff.  Maybe it’s simply that I hated the color yellow at that age.  Either way, it’s never been one of my favorite Disney stories or even fairy tales. However! I was surprised to find that I enjoyed this one […]

Though It All Comes Together, Still Felt Like Too Much Story in One Heist Novel

The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes

December 21, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I’m not sure if it’s been me this year or the novels I’ve picked but I’ve had a lot of novels that have been good/fine without being blown away by too many of them.  This one also fell strongly in the “it’s alright” category for me even though I know others quite loved it. The basic plot description is that Lock, the main character, wants to steal a priceless manuscript from an important political leader – since it once belonged to her family who died […]

Definitely Something That Benefits from a Group Discussion

Solaris by Stanislaw Lem

December 21, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I read this for a book club. It’s a very philosophical book, and I never would have read it on my own. I can’t even say I enjoyed it very much, and it’s the rare novel where am grateful I went to the screening of the 1970s movie version at the art cinema. I also didn’t exactly enjoy the movie but it helped me stay focused on the book when it would become pages of philosophy. Despite that or maybe because of that, it made […]

CBR Book Exchange! Thank you!

December 5, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

I’ve been doing the Monday through Thursday travel work model the last two months, so it was a nice surprise to pull into the driveway after a four hour drive and long work day to discover my CBR exchange package waiting on me! Super excited to read these, and like, ardaigle, I am a huge fan of Out of Print and will definitely be making use of the pouch! Thank you very much, ardaigle!  Also, I have never said this before, but whenever I read […]

I Really Need to Find a Trivia Team

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

December 1, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is the kind of book I wanted and expected when I picked up Matchmaking for Beginners. This was sweet and charming, and absolutely perfect for the moment. Nina never knew her dad and her mother is a world traveling photographer. Nina, on the other hand, is perfectly happy with a relatively contained life and uses books as her escape from reality. She rents a guest house which is perfectly arranged for her needs, has a cat, trivia team and book clubs, and works at […]
