I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Horror Against a Jim Crow Backdrop

Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff

December 22, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I think I’ve read maybe one Lovecraft short story and didn’t particularly enjoy it but I found the concept behind this novel rather intriguing, and decided to pick it up. Of course, I then waited for over a year to read it … what can I say, as creative as I thought the approach would be, I wasn’t sure if I had enough context to enjoy it. The novel begins in the 1950s, as Atticus Turner returns home to Chicago after a stint in the […]

Where It All Started – the first Expanse novel

Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey

December 22, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

I’ve been reading more sci-fi this year, and I figured I should finally get involved with this Expanse thing everyone is talking about.  I’d tried watching the show earlier in the year but it didn’t pull me in, so I figured I’d try the novels first. Leviathan Wakes takes place in the near future – Mars have been colonized, and there are stations further out supporting millions of humans in the Belt.  There are tensions between the Belters and the inner planets, and a political/terrorist […]

Smuggler Meets Shipping Heiress

Brazen and the Beast by Sarah McLean

December 22, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Naturally, after Devil found love in Wicked and the Wallflower, it’s time for his quieter brother, Beast, to find his match.  In this case, that match is Henrietta “Hattie” Sedley, daughter of shipping magnate.  She has grown up watching her father manage his business, and is ready to take over from him – of course, being in 19th century England, she has to deal with gender stereotypes and an incompetent brother who is seen as the natural heir. In fact, she has her brother to […]

Love vs. Prejudices

The Lady in Red by Kelly Bowen

December 22, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I always enjoy Kelly Bowen’s novels so I am not entirely ensure why I haven’t read all her novels yet.  I guess it’s always nice to leave authors for when stumped for a next read.  This novella is considered part of her A Season for Scandal series but also served to introduce her follow on series, The Devils of Dover, with the introduction of the Haverhall School for Young Ladies. Charlotte wants to be an artist but as the daughter of a duke, her family […]

Humanity Sucks But the Spiders Make the Story

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

December 22, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

As the novel begins, human technology is at its apex, and with it, human hubris is also at an all time high.  With biotech and other advances, humanity is ready to spread out across the universe, creating life as they see fit and even guiding evolution.  At least, that’s the plan.  While some are obsessed with what humanity can do and taken it to all its conclusions, a resistance group is more than ready to end it all because humanity has made themselves god. Just […]

Intended and Unintended Consequences

Grave Dance by Kalayna Price

December 22, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Grave Dance takes up shortly after Grave Magic, and Alex is still keeping some parts of what happened hidden from her friends, such as the fact that she opened a magical dark hole in her father’s house.  Still, life is mostly back to normal even as Alex tries to figure out her new understanding of her world while also realizing how much she doesn’t know more than ever. However, it doesn’t take long before she is involved in another incredibly weird case – the morgue […]
