I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Blame it on the Monopoly game

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren

January 3, 2020 by Jen K 5 Comments

I really enjoyed Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating last year, and decided it was time to check out another novel by Christina Lauren (pen name for a writing duo) after reading a somewhat average YA novel.  Like Josh and Hazel, this one was fun and light and breezy, and was filled with modern people that are both relatable and who I would want to be friends with.  (Well, I did wonder if they would all be able to live on their own in […]

Doesn’t Stand Out From the Crowd

The Rule of One by Ashley Saunders, Leslie Saunders

January 3, 2020 by Jen K Leave a Comment

So this novel has been on my Kindle since June – it’s a Kindle Unlimited novel so not sure if it was in an Amazon email or if someone on CBR had recommended it but I think it was one of those, “it’s free, why not?” reactions.  Not that I didn’t find the premise intriguing, but as I realized when I started reading, I obviously hadn’t maybe done enough research.  I have a tendency to read the book descriptions but I don’t go out of […]

The Curse of Being At Near Maximum Capacity of Chins While in France

The Art of Theft by Sherry Thomas

January 3, 2020 by Jen K 2 Comments

This is the fourth novel in the Lady Sherlock series, and will contain spoilers for the previous novels since the character relationships are very much dependent on actions in previous novels.  While all the novels have their own stand alone plots, they very much build on each other for wider context and aren’t the type of mysteries that are relatively stand alone and independent of each.  Having said that, Thomas provides enough context throughout the novel that it’s not necessary to reread the previous novels […]

A Closed Circle Mystery Meets Puzzle Box Meets Necromancy

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

December 29, 2019 by Jen K 2 Comments

I originally heard about this novel during a sci-fi book club discussion, and while the fact that it starts with someone packing up their dirty magazines sounded a bit odd to me, the number of best of lists and the positive chatter about it made me decide to check out the sci-fi novel about “lesbian necromancers.” The first part of the novel is a bit slow since it sets up the premise but it still leaves a lot of details to be discovered later on.  […]

No Need for a Training Montage in this Version of Mulan

The Magnolia Sword: A Ballad of Mulan by Sherry Thomas

December 29, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I hate to admit it, but my only exposure to the legend of Mulan has been the Disney movie.  As a result, I kept waiting for Mulan’s peers to discover her gender and turn on her, but as it turns out that was a Disney addition. However, Thomas added her own twist that I quite enjoyed: Mulan has spent her whole life training for a duel with a rival family of martial artists and fighters.  As the family legend goes, a master swordsmen had a […]

Round 2 at the Boarding Home With Lots of Rules

Angel in a Devil's Arms by Julie Anne Long

December 29, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Angelique Breedlove and her business partner Delilah were on the brink of having to give up on their boarding house when an agent came in and rented their best room for his client for his convenience.  All of the previous novel occurred without their mystery guest, but now he is here. Lucien Durand, Viscount Bolt, has returned to London after years abroad.  In fact, most of society thought he had died, drowning in the Thames a decade before after a night of drinking.  Turns out, […]
