I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. The Deep by Alma Katsu

June 26, 2020 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I’ve been curious about The Hunger by Alma Katsu for ages now but horror isn’t always my go to genre so I was holding off on it.  And yet, when I saw her most recent novel revolved around the Titanic and supernatural connections between the Titanic and its sistership, the Britannica, I couldn’t resist. The novel begins with Annie Hebbley, a Titanic survivor and former crew member, who has spent the last four years in an asylum, recovering from her experiences of that night. However, […]

One Night Stand Fail

A Match Made for Thanksgiving by Jackie Lau

January 18, 2020 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I saw faintingviolet’s review for the third novella in this series, and she mentioned that in the first novella, the parents had ambushed all four of their adult children with Thanksgiving set ups which were based on romance novellas tropes – the set ups were a disaster but I was curious to see what tropes their parents had tried to force, and picked the Thanksgiving novella as a result. Nick is the middle brother in his family, and lives in Toronto.  He loves the city […]

You Had One Rule, Just the One

Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire

January 18, 2020 by Jen K 1 Comment

This is the latest of the Wayward Children novellas, and it returns the reader to the world of the Moors – the home that Jack and Jill found when they went through their door.  McGuire’s second novella explored Jack and Jill’s life before they attended the Home for Wayward Children.  I actually hadn’t expected her to return the Moors, but Jack and Jill’s return at the end of the Every Heart a Doorway had certainly left the potential to explore more of their story. The […]

It Started Off Well …

The Collector's Apprentice by B.A. Shapiro

January 15, 2020 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have to say, I was rather disappointed with this one.  I really enjoyed Shapiro’s novel The Art Forger – it wasn’t perfect, but it had me hooked, and it was entertaining, and I wanted to see what would happen.  While The Muralist wasn’t as gripping, I also enjoyed it –  of course, a historical fiction novel isn’t going to be quite as much of a page turner as a heist thriller. In this novel, Shapiro tries to merge the two, and it makes for […]

Romance Novel Class is in Session

The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams

January 5, 2020 by Jen K 9 Comments

I’m a bit of a sucker for these contemporary romance novels with the comic/drawings as covers.  I like the trend though I don’t think I would like it for historicals.  Anyway, I saw this pop up in my Goodreads stream, and since a few friends had marked as to read or rated it with 4 stars, I decided to give it a shot. This is the first in the series, and I’ve noticed often the first novel in a romance series isn’t always the strongest […]

Breaking the Glass Ceiling to Space

The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal

January 5, 2020 by Jen K 1 Comment

Elma York and her husband Nathaniel are on a long deserved vacation in the Poconos after a very busy time at work, when an world altering event happens: a meteor strikes DC and the eastern seaboard, leading to massive destruction, earthquakes and tidal waves.  If Elma and Nathaniel had been home, they never would have survived, and it’s a miracle they make it out of the Poconos alive, using their unique expertise from working in the space program to predict some of the immediate after […]
