I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Back to a life of crime

The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon

April 20, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

After the events of the last novel, Paige is back in her old life in the Syndicate, London’s Underground crime ring of clairvoyants. She wants to fight back and do something about what she witnessed in Oxford and expose the oppressive authoritarian government but she doesn’t know what to do next: no one would believe her if she just told the truth as it sounds too fantastical, and the leaders of the Syndicate, who could make a difference, don’t want to hear her – too […]

Perfectly pleasant but could have been more

A Love Like the Sun by Riss M Neilson

April 6, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Why is that some books make you unfairly overthink when other very similar ones don’t? Does that mean something else is going on in the reader’s life to make it stand out more? Is it one of those where it’s been building for a while from reading certain novels and this is the one that broke the camel’s back or is it that this author maybe highlighted it too much and made it hard to ignore? Or maybe it was a combination of the three. […]

What makes a good leader? A just society?

The Will of the Many by James Islington

April 6, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Going in, I was expecting to like this but I don’t think I realized how much and how well it would hit themes that I generally tend to enjoy in fiction. Layers upon layers of intrigue and deceptions? A competitive academic setting? A detailed and intricately thought out magic/power system that is very logic based but doesn’t expect me to do the math behind it to get the gist? In some ways, the easiest comparison might be Red Rising but that’s also lazy and only […]

Crime syndicates, clairvoyants and angelic figures

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

April 1, 2025 by Jen K 4 Comments

I remember meaning to read The Bone Season when it came out but then before I got around to it, seemed like the reviews and reactions from people whose judgement I trust was pretty middling so I didn’t prioritize it, and never got around to it. I quite liked A Priory of the Orange Tree (and the prequel novel) so I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Samantha Shannon had gone back and revised The Bone Season for its 10th anniversary and it was Narfna […]

The case of the disappearing ghosts

Installment Immortality by Seanan McGuire

March 31, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

While October Daye is my favorite series from Seanan McGuire, I quite enjoy the InCryptid series. The biggest thing with these is that she switches narrators throughout the series – sometimes it is quite fun to get a new perspective but other times, I also wish to go back to other narrators. As a result, these can be a little more hit or miss me for me. Since Verity was the first narrator, I think she might still be one of my favorites but I […]

Sunrise on the reaping

The Haymitch behind the Capitol’s narrative

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

March 30, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Well fuck. That was so much more devastating than I expected. It’s been forever since I read the original trilogy but I rewatched the movies recently – which means I likely missed some details that didn’t quite make it into the movies (especially around Maysilee’s family and Merrilee). At least, I could truly appreciate appearances of the younger versions of some of the characters from Catching Fire who appeared as mentors (and the amount of tragic backstory we learned about some of them was wrecking). […]
