I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. The Warbler by Sarah Beth Durst

April 22, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This one feels a bit more similar to Sarah Beth Durst’s novel, The Lost, than some of her other more recently published ones – even if The Lost is my most recently read of her. Something about the main character in this one felt very reminiscent of that earlier novel, and both novels were centered within a version of our world rather than within a fantasy world setting (like Race the Sand or The Spellshop). Regardless of the setting, mother-daughter relationships always play a prominent […]

“Take these [melted] wings”

Sweet Obsession by Katee Robert

April 22, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have been reading this series since it started, having stumbled on Katee Robert after Sarah MacLean recommended the first novella from her A Touch of Taboo series. As someone that enjoys Greek mythology, I am very much here for the reimagining of Olympus into a modern day city run by the 12. As a result, even when I am less excited about any given pairing or grouping of love interests, the broader world politics and implications are still interesting. Still, the last few novels […]

What was the point?

The Book That Held Her Heart by Mark Lawrence

April 21, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I was dreading this book. I found this series last summer, and the first one was so magical and creative. The second one, though, was already a bit of a struggle, focusing on the darkness of the story being explored, losing the magic that made it so interesting even while exploring dark themes. So was I worried about whether this would get the story back on track? Of course. Then I saw this novel was around 360 pages – while the length surprised me since […]

The Hanged Man: Murder and Tarot

Who Will Remember by C.S. Harris

April 20, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is the 20th novel in the series about a crime solving nobleman in Regency England, and the series continues to go strong. This one is more of a straight up murder mystery – some of the middle novels in the series got a bit wrapped up in French espionage story lines. I would even say this one would actually even be approachable to someone that hadn’t read any other novels in the series – of course, you’d be missing some of the complexity of […]

Vera Wong’s Guide to Snooping (On a Dead Man) by Jesse Q. Sutanto

April 20, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I quite enjoyed the first Vera Wong novel so I was excited to see there was a sequel coming out this month. And yet, I admit I was a little worried going into this novel. Jesse Q. Sutanto has another series that is slightly over the top but for that one, the second novel just took things so over the top, that the premise didn’t work for me and I stopped reading it. I’m happy to say that Vera Wong doesn’t go down that route. […]

Feeling a bit lactose intolerant after this one

When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi

April 20, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

When Emmalita mentioned that she had a hard time getting into this novel because of the ever changing  points of view, I was hoping it might work better for me. After all, I love World War Z, and I don’t think that one has any repeat narrators – unlike Robocalypse, which structurally looked like it would follow a similar approach but then ended up having reoccurring characters. Unfortunately, she was right. Something about this one didn’t work as well for me as it did in […]
