Princesses and Basque terrorists and murder, oh my

Number eleven. A little emphasis on “numb”. In this installment, Aimee is doing a favor for her godfather, Morbier. He has been called away to Lyon and can’t get ahold of his girlfriend, the beautiful and mysterious Xavierre. He entreats her to go to her home where s he is hosting a wedding rehearsal party for her daughter, Irati. Aimee reluctantly agrees (Morbier’s favors always come with a price) and as the affair is way out in the exclusive area of Passy, Rene offers to drive […]

Hauntingly lyrical account of madness

March 2, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

I don’t even know how to begin to write about this book and I’m still having trouble shaking this story from my mind. Dr. Perry Baird was by all accounts a brilliant doctor and was doing some ground breaking experiments trying to discover a biochemical root in manic depression. He had a thriving practice as a dermatologist, a wife and two young daughters and scores of friends. He also was manic depressive himself and had endured some stays in mental hospitals. Much of this book is […]

I’ve got a bad feeling about this…….

March 2, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

I’m determined to do this, get all the way through the Aimee Leduc Investigation books in a row. This is book 1o, and it starts out with Aimee romancing a new man, while Rene toils away at the office. She gets a call from him informing her that 100,000 francs have been wired into their account and he can’t trace where it’s coming from. A short time later, a woman enters the offices of Leduc Detective, wearing a motorcycle helmet just like Aimee’s and shoots […]

If you like dick jokes, this is the book for you

February 27, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

“Writing a book is a fantastical exercise in manic depression” Apparently Jason Mulgrew was/is a wildly popular blogger, internet figure and one of People Magazine’s 50 Hottest Bachelors (2005). I had no idea. Thanks to BookBub, I got the e-book free and it lived in my Kindle for a few months before I finally gave it a try during a recent bout of insomnia. This memoir of growing up in South Philly in the 80’s and 90’s is often profane (with chapter titles like “Guns. Fucking […]

my seeeestra?

February 27, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

I’m starting to think that binge reading an entire series in one go isn’t such a great idea. What started out as a welcome immersion into Aimee Leducs Paris has become a bit of a slog. When a particular book in the series is sub-par, it seems to have more impact and even if the next ones are better, I can see more and more of  the little things that bother, annoy or downright piss me off. However, since I am only four books away from completing […]

A return to form

February 25, 2015 by janniethestrange 1 Comment

After my miserable experience with the last Aimee Leduc book, I approached this with more than a little trepidation. I am extremely happy to say that it was just a little bump along the cobblestone streets and Aimee and Rene are back with a vengeance. Yves, Aimee’s on again, off again paramour, the world travelling investigative reporter appears out of nowhere one warm August night. The last she knew, he was in Cairo and they had parted on not terribly friendly terms. But there he […]
