All they had together

Washing down a birth control pill with a glass of milk. Just another day in the life of a teenaged girl living in Greenwich Village in the 70’s. Rainey Royal,  her father, Howard (a celebrated jazz musician), and Gordy, Howards best friend, share a tumbledown brownstone with a rotation of musicians, sycophants and hangers-on.  Her mother abandoned the family for an ashram in Colorado and much of Rainey’s life during the book speaks to her abscence. “He was menacingly cool.” That phrase sums up the wildly inventive jazz artist […]

Blameless is the one who remains constant in the face of danger

Wow, another powerful story. After Jacques Lob’s death in 1990, prolific writer and translator Benjamin Legrand continued on with the Snowpiercer concept with the original artist, Jean-Marc Robette. We begin aboard Snowpiercer 2, the Icebreaker. It is said Snowpiercer 1 never knew of 2’s existence and the first has gained an almost mythological status amongst the inhabitants of the Icebreaker. It is their big threat, since they have lost all radio contact. It was said the braking tests were necessary in the event that 2 came […]

No one wants to look hard at disagreeable things

April 1, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

Yeesh, this book depressed the crap outta me. After finishing it, I turned on Netflix and watched a few episodes of the Danish comedy Rita so I could feel better about life and humanity again. Then when the mail came I had a box stuffed full of Jim Butcher’s Dresden novels waiting for me. Saved! Caroline “Caro” Spencer is a former teacher in her 70’s. After a heart attack, she is no longer able to care for herself and her home. She moves in with […]

Everything alive wants revenge, even if it’s simply for the affliction of existence

March 31, 2015 by janniethestrange 3 Comments

YeeHaw!!! The (mis)adventures of James Stark (aka Sandman Slim) just keep getting better and better. Granted I am only 2 in but dang-a-lang I am having a blast. Thank you, Emmalita (is there a way to imbed usernames? I dunno. Still on a fun-as-hell book high and can’t figure it out). Some months after James saved the world (twice) he’s just futzing around LA, working for hire with the Golden Vigil and Lucifer. His relationship with Kasabian has reached cruising speed and some of their […]

The Promised Land is Lost

March 31, 2015 by janniethestrange 1 Comment

I saw Joon-Ho Bong’s film Snowpiercer  last summer and immediately thereafter purchased the graphic novel it was based on. Before I got around to reading it, a friend borrowed a stack of books and graphic novels and it was in the stack. Yesterday the stack came back home to roost and I pulled out 1:the Escape. As much as I admired and enjoyed the film, it was it’s own animal and I am glad that so much time transpired so I could see the GN […]

Some people are little Chernobyls

March 30, 2015 by janniethestrange 2 Comments

I have to got to hurry up and write this review before it drops another star. For me this book was like an extrememly rich meal; you enjoy it and even relish it for a while, but pretty soon you are getting nauseated and you know you are really going to regret it the next day. And maybe even the day after that. Cassie Maddox is trying to get her life and career on track after the terrible fallout from Operation Vestal (See In the […]
