You dirty egg-suckin’ dog!

In this collection of The Goon, Franky and the Goon go after Fishy Pete, who has been howling for blood ever since the Goon chopped off his remaining arm and leg. Pretty soon they are knee deep in all manner of evil fish. “Ain’t it the bee’s knees ta hear fish skulls crackin’ against the finest machine-tooled chrome-plated pipe wrench 1932 technology had to offer!” Even though they prevail, they still have the nameless man, the zombie priest to contend with. The Goon has confined […]

Knife to the eye!!

The Goon in Rough Stuff collects the first three comics Eric Powell did featuring The Goon . This is the Rough Stuff: Milking-it-for-all-its-worth-edition, which also has some comic strips and other artwork at the end.  It’s a fun look into the beginning of this five time Eisner Award winner and a bit of an origin story. The Goon is the enforcer for the gangster kingpin Labrazio. Not only does he have to take on regular thugs, but the town is overrun with zombies, who are […]

Because the hourglass is running, you pathetic, randy little male spider

Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series made him a literary celebrity. The series can be uneven but overall I have really enjoyed the dark mind and worldview of Harry. Even when he’s in far flung places like Australia and Bangkok, the bitter chill of Norway is always present. When he’s not putting Harry through the wringer, he has written some kids books and a couple of one off novels; Headhunters, which was a better movie than book and the breathlessly taut, The Son. His newest non-Harry attempt is the […]

Bunnies, whizpoppers and dog costume parties

After the trauma of reading Ruby, I needed something life-affirming. I vaguely remember reading Ms. Bergens first memoir, Knock Wood back in the day and enjoying her singular voice. A Fine Romance focuses on her romances with three people in the second half of her life; her first husband, the brilliant French director Louis Malle, her daughter with Louis, Chloe and her current husband, Marshall Rose. I think I would have really enjoyed the audio book read by her because love her rich voice. It […]

The womb or the earth.

April 8, 2015 by janniethestrange 2 Comments

My hands are shaking as I type this. After closing the book I had to take a deep breath and steady my nerves. Is it too early for a nice comforting shot of bourbon? I am giving this book five stars but I will also try to warn folks who are sensitive to violence, true violence of psychic, physical and sexual nature. The story needs to be told but not all need to hear it in it’s entirety. There were times I didn’t want to […]

No love potions, endless purses, parties or other entertainments

“But just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean that there isn’t an invisible demon about to eat your face.” So begins my foray into the world of Harry Dresden, Wizard and Private Investigator. This first book in the series sets things up nicely, introducing us into Harry’s milieu, set in Chicago (happily one of my favorite cities). There is Karrin Murphy, the director of Special Investigations (read: paranormal) for the downtown Chicago P.D. Harry works as a consultant for her from time to time, partially […]
