Completely spannered

When I left Hawkwind, the cojones came with me. This book is not for the faint of heart or those easily offended. If you have ever seen Lemmy speak, you will know that what you see is what you get. This book feels like you are sitting down at the bar at the Rainbow, doing shots of Jack Daniel’s while Lem smokes and drinks and spins his tale. He’s not in the business of sugar-coating anything, that’s for sure, but I gotta admire the guy […]

The gift is this astonishing book

July 9, 2015 by janniethestrange 6 Comments

Okay, I didn’t know anything about this book and I am so glad I didn’t. To have the story unfold in it’s own way made this delightful, breathless and surprisingly poignant reading. In that spirit, I will not spoil here. M.R. Carey is a pseudonym for Mike Carey, writer and creator of the Felix Castor series (which I have got to check out ASAP!) among other things. I remember him from his excellent run of Lucifer comics for Vertigo back in the day. Still, what […]

One of the greatest explorers the world has never known

July 8, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

This  book  was an absolute delight. Mervyn Peake was a novelist, playwright, painter, poet, short story writer, designer and war artist. Probably known best for his Gormenghast series, I have always been on the lookout for other books and oddments of his as I find his work thoroughly engaging and highly imaginative. “Pickle my carcass! how innocent I was!” This book is told in the words and drawings of the unnamed “Lost Uncle”. He is in search of the great White Lion and has been […]

*Literally means “Don’t put a spoon in your eye over it.” Siaru idiom meaning “don’t let it make you crazy” I had to really take that advice to heart while slogging through this brick. It’s not that I won’t read loooooooong books (see Karl Ove Knausgaard). I have very little experience with the fantasy genre but one of my pledges to myself while undertaking this Cannonball Read was to try new writers and genres and mediums. Regular fans of the stuff may have an easier time […]

Invicible

Continuing my rock memoir/bio trend with this book by Pat Benatar. I will say that I liked her stuff back in the day (I mean who didn’t get up and do that shoulder shake thing when Love is a Battlefield came on MTV?) but didn’t really pay that close attention to her career then. Zip forward in time to last year, when tickets went on sale for a show here in town. Pat and her husband Neil “Spyder” Giraldo were touring in celebration of 35 years […]

Get your kicks on route sixty-six

July 7, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

The book opens with an Allen Ginsberg-ish beat poet and a Neal Cassady-esque novelist squabbling over who is actually the true artist and free spirit, blah blah blah. Then they set off on the road (arr arr). After the events of Blacksad: A Silent Hell, John and Weeks are parting ways at the airport in New Orleans. Weeks has to get back to the city and his job at the paper. John is flat broke (after refunding his fee in the previous case) and needs […]
