I am your man if you’re looking for trouble

The late great Phil Lynott is one of those rock and roll figures that still looms large, decades after his death. So many bands and artists cite him and his band Thin Lizzy as an inspiration.  I still have a battered old vinyl copy of Thin Lizzy’s Nightlife from 1974 and while it’s not their most popular album it’s still my favorite. That will illustrate that I am not the most diehard of Lizzy fans and therein lies my problem with this book. Putterford conducted […]

Doom

July 17, 2015 by janniethestrange 1 Comment

From the delightfully creepy and imaginative mind of Mike Mignola comes Jenny Finn: Doom. Set in London, the populace is gripped by the mysterious deaths of local whores. What no one seems to be addressing is a curious plague that is slowly overtaking the city. Down by the docks, country boy Joe sees a young girl amongst the throng of ne’er do well’s and takes it upon himself to escort her to safety. But who needs to be saved from whom? As Joe dashes after […]

Certain destinations are inevitable

Ah, the late eighties/early nineties. I was all about the Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, the Cure and the Vertigo line of comics. My favorites were the Neil Gaiman Sandman series and Mike Carey’s Lucifer. Reading Carey’s new novel The Girl With All the Gifts (The gift is this astonishing book) made me want to dive back into that world. But would it be as good as I remember? Would the passage of time and life experience enhance or hinder this experiment? Then I decided I was […]

Till things are brighter, I’m the man in black

While it would have been terrific if Johnny Cash had been able to narrate an audiobook version of this autobiography, I was still able to hear his smoky baritone as I read this. Told in a straightforward style, he recounts some of the highs and lows in his life and in his long and storied career. He is thoughtful and well-read and strongly influenced by his Christian faith. Each sections title is named after one of his homes, whether it be Cinnamon Hill in Jamaica, out on […]

You know that Ray Charles song IF IT WASN’T FOR BAD LUCK? Oh I tell everybody if it wasn’t for bad luck now now I believe, I believe I would have no luck at all I just wouldn’t have no luck at all That’s pretty much the situation for Eva and her half sister Iris. Eva is 12 when her mother tells her that her father’s wife has died and it’s time for them to go see him. They get all spiffed up -Eva’s braids […]

You make a good Pip

Rob Sheffield writes for Rolling Stone and has a few other books out that are pop culture and music driven. I remembered him as one of the talking heads for those I Love the 80’s and I Love the 90’s!! shows because I rarely (if ever) agreed with his taste in music and he reminded me of those guys who stand around the record store arguing about the most obscure bands on the planet. I can see him walking into the record store in Stephen […]
