Thanks to the fine folks at BookBub, I got the Kindle edition of this book for free last spring. Part of my quest with this Cannonball Read was to try out new genres and forms, so this book, the first in the Airship Racing Chronicles, fits the Steampunk bill. And you know, it was kinda fun. As the book opens, Lily Starship and her airship crew are flying over London, racing in the Airship Grand Prix. After a thrilling finish, in which they disappointingly come in second, […]
Jaguars don’t kiss horses
Spanning several decades, the stories in this book show the loosely and serendipitously connected characters that orbit the title characters, Louisa and Bear. Starting with Louisa’s cousin Lizzie, who becomes pregnant after her first and only sexual encounter with the husband of her history professor. Still unsure if she will keep the child, she leaves Yale and moves back in with her father. The pregnancy is difficult and soon her estranged mother moves back into the family home to care for her. The time they […]
Seasons in the abyss
There is no doubt that Slayer was instrumental in creating the thrash metal scene in the 80’s, along with Metallica and the Bay Area bands Exodus and Testament. In their 3 decade long career they have gone on to influence so many bands, in and out of the scene. I’ve seen Slayer play live a couple of times, as it is truly a rite of passage for metalheads, and have my favorite line up (see below) but I don’t own any of their albums*. So as […]
November. It was going to get even darker.
The first snow has fallen in Oslo and a young boy awakens to find his mother gone, the only trace is her pink scarf that is tied around the neck of the mysterious snowman that has appeared in the yard. Jonas doesn’t know who built the snowman or why it is facing the house, but he does know enough to be afraid. Meanwhile, Harry Hole is assigned to the case and along with a new transfer from Bergen, Katrina Bratt, they search for clues to […]
Uncommon lives
Demo is a collection of twelve different stories about outsiders. There are no recurring characters and some of these young people appear to have mutant powers of some sort yet this is in no way a superhero comic. I didn’t love every single story, but feel the book was a success as a whole and enjoyed the journey. Written, drawn and produced over 18 months, there is a real evolution in style and tone. Even Becky’s artwork shifts and changes, sometimes using a more manga style […]
Once upon a time I was somebody else
Continuing with my rock and roll bio fest, comes this well researched and enjoyable book about Dave Grohl by Paul Brannigan. Brannigan is a music journalist, used to be an editor for Kerrang! and as such known Dave for well over a decade, right back to the DC punk scene days. This gives the book a real insider feel to it, as they have both lived through and have participated in some real seminal times in rock and punk. Usually I get annoyed with interviewers who interject […]
