In India

The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga

May 24, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

I know next to nothing about India. Never been there. Have a few friends/acquaintances who are but don’t know enough about their experiences to speak intelligently on what the country is like. This may have been the first fictional novel I’ve read set in the book so I went into it with eyes open. Take that all with a grain of salt because I don’t know what the perspective is from actual Indians on the book. But as a deconstruction of the country of India, […]

Tragic: Worst Person You Know Makes a Good Point

American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis

May 22, 2021 by Jake 3 Comments

TW: mentions of rape, violent murder Welp, I guess the fourth time is a charm. Brett Easton Ellis’ thing is never going to be my thing. Vomiting brand names, writing with a mix of flatness and kinetic energy, satirizing culture to the point where there’s no line. Glamorama was trash and the rest of his works have never done much for me. However, I’ve read a lot lately about New York City in the 80s and what Wall Street was like in that time. I also read […]

And As We Age

Killer Content by Olivia Blacke

May 16, 2021 by Jake 2 Comments

I recently discovered the term “geriatric millennial.” That’s apparently a catch all for millennials who were born between the years 1980-1985. Damn whoever invented in. I know I’m far out of the target audience for BRANDZ these days but I’m far from geriatric. Yeah I got a bad back and student loans and can’t afford a house and don’t have the energy to stuff… BUT! Anyway, I was thinking about that term recently because this is one of the first cozy mysteries I’ve read. I […]

Strawberry Fields Forever

The Dakota Winters by Tom Barbash

May 14, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

You will probably not like this book. I know that’s a weird thing to say for a book I rated 4-stars. It sounds like I’m being critical of it and that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m not sure it’s a good book but it’s a book written for someone like me: someone who loves adventures in Manhattan. Turn the clock back to 1980, throw in some historical figures, lifestyle porn, and urban tourism and I am content. The book itself: it’s main character, […]

Fire Fire Everywhere

The Burning Girls by CJ Tudor

May 11, 2021 by Jake 1 Comment

This book. Hmm. I think it would be easier to break this down into four parts: a thing I loved, I thing I liked, a thing I disliked and a thing I hated. A thing I loved… Being a mainline Protestant minister in  the post-church western world, I think CJ Tudor captures the subtleties and nuances of what parish ministry is like. She herself is not religious but whoever advised her did an excellent job. I appreciated it. A thing I liked… I don’t read […]

Money Never Sleeps

Liar's Poker by Michael Lewis

May 7, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

What’s incredible about Michael Lewis’ Liar’s Poker is just how funny it is. You want to be mad at all of these people for ruining the world, but they’re so ridiculous, you often can’t help but laugh. I’m more than familiar with Lewis’ work. Moneyball is one of my all-time favorite novels. The Big Short had me real angry. Lewis is one of the great journalists of my time. This was the book that kick started his career. And he didn’t need long to discover his writing voice. Alternating between his time as […]
