What Comes Next

By Way of Sorrow by Robyn Gigl

October 4, 2021 by Jake 3 Comments

Read as part of CBR13Bingo: they/she/he. The author is a trans woman and the protagonist (as well as another main character) is also a trans woman.  Once again, I’m grateful for book bingos because they challenge me to read stuff that I’ve been making excuses to put off. It’s no secret that the mystery/thriller world is largely devoid of bestselling LGBTQIA+ writers, specifically trans writers. This is not for lack of talent, rather a lack of seeking talent on behalf of publishing houses. On the rare […]

Further Down The River

Wicked River by Jenny Milchman

October 2, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR13Bingo: Outdoors. Almost the entirety of the book takes place outdoors.  The good thing about Book Bingos and other reading challenges is that they encourage you to read stuff you wouldn’t otherwise read. Take Wicked River. I won this book in a library bingo contest. I wouldn’t have read it otherwise…but I hate letting go of free books. It likely would have sat on my shelf for at least a year, maybe longer, had “Outdoors” not been an option in the Cannonball Read Bingo books. […]

Been There, Doing That Again

Rose Gold by Walter Mosley

September 29, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR13Bingo: Old Series. The Easy Rawlins series debuted in 1990. As the times change, Walter Mosley has changed his most famous creation with them. He’s also changed his style. I don’t know if it’s for better or worse but I like it. I’ve written on his Leonid McGill series about how Mosley has incorporated some surrealist existentialism into those works and how they felt different to what he had written before. These don’t read like McGill books but they do have […]

They Knew Each Other By the End

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

September 28, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR13bingo: flora. There are trees and plants on the cover.  If I were to teach a class on creative writing, I would without question assign one of Liane Moriarty’s books. The only other one I’ve read of hers was Big Little Lies, mostly because her accuracy on relationship dynamics is so painfully on point that I can’t stand it. I imagine I’ll finish her catalog someday. Whether I do or not, she’s a writer that perspective writers should study. Her characters are so […]

Davy Jones Locker

Dixie City Jam by James Lee Burke

September 25, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR13Bingo: Machine. The book revolves around a missing Nazi sub sunk in the Louisiana Gulf Coast as a MacGuffin.  Sigh. Every Dave Robicheaux novel will feature things that will both delight and frustrate me… The good… -Some wonderful descriptions of south Louisiana atmosphere, both weather and culture. You really feel like your transported to the place but not in a gratuitous way. -A few True Detective-esque reflections on the nature of life and crime that’ll take my breath away and keep me […]

The Rich Eat You

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager

September 23, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR13Bingo: Home. The book takes place in an apartment complex where the protagonist is house sitting.  Riley Sager’s thing never seemed to be my thing. I tried Final Girls but quit after thirty pages because it gave me that airport bestseller page-ripper vibe. Nothing against those kinds of books but they’re not for me. I don’t fancy myself (hah!) as a high brow sophisticate when it comes to my reading tastes. But I usually enjoy stuff with more substance than what you get […]
