Happy Thanksgiving! In addition to feasting on food, I spend the holiday feasting on books. After a few long reads, I plowed through some things I’ve been meaning to get to for a while. Enjoy! Y: The Last Man **** I was excited to finally read this, being a big Brian K. Vaughan fan and being intrigued by the premise. Stephen King blurbed this as the best comic he ever read. The TV show looked good and I wanted to get in on it. And […]

I Read All About It

The Man Who Owns the News: Inside the Secret World of Rupert Murdoch by Michael Wolff

November 22, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

This book read like one Bond villain describing the machinations of another Bond villain with relish and glee. I read the first and last of Michael Wolff’s Trump books coming away unimpressed. Wolff gets the hot gossip, such as it is, by being an unrepentant jock sniffer but that’s all these books are: gossip. I never thought I’d read him again but as I’ve cast around for books on Rupert Murdoch in light of my love of the tv show Succession, this one kept coming up […]

Jersey? Sure.

The Barbed-Wire Kiss by Wallace Stroby

November 19, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Hmmmmm. I really liked this book. It’s a great first novel and I promise to read more Wallace Stroby. Thing is, I wanted to like this book more. But it leans one some of my least favorite tropes in male-written crime fiction. The first chapter is one of the best first chapters I’ve read in a crime novel. It does a great job of introducing setting, protagonist and problem. Right away, I was pulled into its bleak, lower-class Jersey shore atmosphere. The dialogue was finely tuned and […]

Waiting to Die

Shoot the Moonlight Out by William Boyle

November 16, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

William Boyle has done it again. I don’t know if he’ll ever write anything as delightfully manic as A Friend Is A Gift You Give Yourself. But as long as he keeps doing these Brooklyn-based character driven crime stories, I’m a happy reader. This one is familiar if you’ve read his others but you don’t need to in order to dive in. They’re loosely connected so you can start anywhere. Boyle uses the template of a crime novel to create a world of south Brooklyn that he […]

What the Rich Do in the Shadows

The Missing Hours by Julia Dahl

November 14, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

___Nesting here for major triggers___     cn. the book itself describes the after effects of rape, revenge porn and other means of violence. If any of that is triggering or problematic for you, sit this one out. I grabbed Julia Dahl’s new standalone The Missing Hours on a bit of a whim. I read an interview she gave on the invaluable website crimereads.com and it seemed interesting. I had read The Invisible City a few years ago and enjoyed it well enough for a freshman effort so I […]

Long

Huey Long by T. Harry Williams

November 13, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Long indeed. And long indeed. So Long. So long. Too long. Pro Long. I’m not making double entendres here, this book about Huey Long is very very long. I mean yeah, what did I expect for 876 pages? A fair question. Well, I think that while it’s quite the read, and I understand why it gets the label of greatness it does, it’s too long (also too Long but we’ll talk about that more) for its own good. I’ve dealt with long books before. This […]
