J's Reviews:

It’s not enough to be a teenager, but an alien, too?

June 5, 2018 by J Leave a Comment

Kara is in the thick of adolescent growing pangs, unsure of her place in the world, like any first world teenager. She’s surrounded by people she loves and who love her in return, but she struggles to connect in a meaningful way. You know… because she can lift tractors with a single hand and fly and stuff. So when her powers start going a little haywire, there’s nowhere to turn for support. Is it some sort of super-puberty? Or is something else going on? Tamaki’s […]

Superman and Superboy fly over a field, the Kent homestead in the distance.

Superman Vol. 5: Hopes and Fears

April 17, 2018 by J Leave a Comment

Because I don’t keep up with this title, I was a little concerned that I might be at a bit of a loss starting this without having read Vol 4, but I needn’t have worried. Hopes and Fears collects three separate story arcs of the Superman title, and little prior knowledge is required: The Kents go on a road trip over the Fourth of July weekend, taking a break from their daily routine and paying call at various patriotic landmarks. Superman goes toe-to-toe with Parallax, […]

Naked, muscular, and tattooed torso of a blond dude looking down

“It wasn’t that she liked alien sex. She just liked drawing weird s***.”

Oh, this was an unexpected delight! I am belatedly realizing this is my second Talia Hibbert book. The first didn’t leave a strong impression, but A Girl Like Her has me giving Hibbert’s catalog a closer look. I borrowed it for free through Amazon Prime, and will be buying it (through the CBR link) as soon as this review posts. Metalsmith Evan Miller is new to the small town of Ravenswood. As an outsider, he’s not quite sure what to make of his next door […]

Advanced Physical Chemistry, by Susannah Nix

Third time’s the charm

March 18, 2018 by J Leave a Comment

Oh, goodness, this was so adorable. Penny Popplestone loves her local coffee shop. She works from home, and part of her daily routine is making the trek to the shop for a measure of human interaction. She’s bright and friendly with everyone, even hot-but-surly barista Caleb who seems immune to her charm. It’s a bit of a surprise when Caleb reaches out in sympathy after Penny discovers that her boyfriend is cheating on her (by bringing the other woman to the coffee shop!). Penny decides […]

Making Up, by Lucy Parker

Not a single “Trix are for kids” joke to be found

March 9, 2018 by J 1 Comment

After a delightful romance debut and an equally charming sequel, Lucy Parker returns with another romance set in the world of London theater. We met Trix and Leo in Pretty Face: Trix was Lily’s close friend recovering from a break-up with an abusive boyfriend and Leo was the good-looking make-up artist for Lily’s show. They are flirting in the background during the pre-opening party. Dan the jerk may be out of Trix’s life, but the damage he did remains: Trix has lost a bit of […]

If You're In My Office, It's Already Too Late, by James Sexton

Marriage is not an end. It is a means to an end.

March 3, 2018 by J Leave a Comment

Well, this was a terrifying read. I can see why the author says he doesn’t get invited to cocktail parties. (He does, however, point out that he still gets invited to weddings. So there’s that.) James Sexton has litigated over twelve hundred divorces in his career. He’s seen the liars and the dirty, dirty cheats. The acrimonious and amicable. He’s represented the ones blind-sided by the divorce papers, he’s represented an actual pimp in a custody hearing. He’s been described as a ruthless sociopath, and […]
