I've been doing this since 2015, and though I'm not going to read a hundred books a year, I plan on doing this for the foreseeable future. I also maintain the Cannonball Read database, and make infrequent updates on our reading habits. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ingres77's Quick Questions interview.)

Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre by Max Brooks

September 5, 2022 by ingres77 3 Comments

Told in a similar style to Brooks’ previous book, World War Z, Devolution recounts the massacre of a small, isolated eco-centric community in rural Washington State. Told predominantly through diary entries by Kate Holland, we learn about the community, their ecological goals, and how they handle the devastating volcanic eruption of Mt. Rainier. Cut off from neighboring communities and forgotten about because of the natural disaster, some residents begin trying to become self-sufficient while awaiting rescue. As they try making their homes more energy efficient […]

I think George RR Martin read this before writing A Game of Thrones.

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

August 7, 2022 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

Ken Follett left his journalism career after three years of boredom to work for a small, London-based book publisher in the late-1970s. He began writing fiction as a hobby, and became proficient enough to end up earning money at it. With the publication of The Eye of the Needle in 1978, Follett entered the international stage and super stardom, selling 10 million copies. For the next several years, he wrote several best sellers and seemed set on a path to writing airport novels. Everything changed […]

I didn’t love it.

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

June 12, 2022 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

I love John Scalzi. From Old Man’s War to Fuzzy Nation to The Dispatchers. I haven’t loved everything he’s done (Zoe’s Tale and the Interdependency series come to mind), but I generally look forward to everything he’s written. I also love kaiju. Or, at least, the idea of kaiju. I was excited to see Pacific Rim when that came out, until I actually saw it. And I loved Godzilla movies when I was a kid. So there was an inevitability to this book when I […]

Looking back on the last two months, and this is all I have to show for it.

Angels and Demons by Dan Brown

April 9, 2022 by ingres77 12 Comments

I was in college in 2005, studying archaeology and talking to creationists in my free time. The Passion of the Christ had come out the previous year, and I was smart enough to sound like I knew something about the world, but not smart enough to just leave well enough alone. I spent a lot of time talking about religion, and science, and art, and history, and literature. Politics would come later – but I was a college student, and it was the point in […]

I’m still recuperating from The Wheel of Time

The Moving Target by Ross Macdonald

The Drowning Pool by Ross Macdonald

The Ice Harvest by Scott Phillips

February 24, 2022 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

I’ve ordered these reviews exactly opposite from the order in which I read them, just to make things slightly more confusing. The Moving Target I’m trying to review this book, but the plot has intermingled in my brain with that of The Drowning Pool. They are virtually indistinguishable from one another. It also doesn’t help that I finished this book about two weeks ago. I typically listen to audiobooks at work, but I’ve gotten kind of obsessed with the podcast Knowledge Fight, which critically examines […]

2021 Year End Round-Up!

January 8, 2022 by ingres77 12 Comments

We’ve wrapped up yet another year of the Cannonball Read! Everyone give yourself a pat on the back for all that you’ve reviewed, and remember to give yourself a pass for the things that you didn’t review. There’s no pressure, here. I want to make this more aesthetically digestible, but it’s late and I’m tired. So I’ll just cut the introduction short. There were 5,394 reviews written for CBR13. That’s a record! Of those reviews, there are 3,097 unique books/stories. Our top 10 (14) most […]
