In the summer of 2005, in the Korangal Valley of Afghanistan, a US Navy SEAL reconnaissance team was ambushed by local militia. Three of the four men were killed in the fight, and a quick reaction force helicopter sent in to rescue the team was destroyed by an RPG, killing all 8 SEALs on board. Only one man came out of the battle alive. This is his story. It’s a well-written book, both informative and entertaining. Luttrell sprinkles the book with humorous anecdotes about the […]
To stare into the abyss and see a vacant soul
Objective Troy (2015) Not previously reviewed for CBR. On September 30, 2011, the US assassinated Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Kahn in Al Jawf, Yemen. Both men were American citizens, though only Awlaki had been targeted by the US government. Two weeks later, Awlaki’s 16-year old son, Abdulraman al-Awlaki, was also killed in a drone strike in Yemen, though he wasn’t specifically targeted. He, Awlaki, came to national prominence as a “moderate voice” of Islam following the devastation of 9/11, giving numerous interviews to the media; […]
And all our joys are but the ghost of a memory.
I don’t know why, but I’ve found myself drawn to depressing, broken people. First November 9 by Colleen Hoover, then Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill, then, after the brief interlude of joy and wonder that is the world of Harry Potter, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and Cujo by Stephen King. Well, The Girl on the Train continues the theme. Rachel is an overweight, unemployed, and divorced alcoholic who rides the train into London every day to avoid telling her roommate and only […]
You can’t handle the trials (heh) and tribulations of the 1%.
The Firm (1991) Not reviewed previously on CBR. In many ways, this is the perfect book to adapt into a Tom Cruise movie. The main character is young, cocky, great looking, and he has to run. The only difference, really, between Mitch and Tom Cruise is that the character is taller. So, he looks more like Patrick Bateman. The image that kept recurring to me, in fact, was Christian Bale in American Psycho. Sexy. The problem here, for me, is that he isn’t an every […]
4,100 pages of perpetual youth.
I read these books last month, but wanted to save them to celebrate my Cannonball. When I was a teenager, I thought I read a lot. But I don’t think I ever read 40 books in a year before. Last year, reading mostly historical biographies, I only made it to 29 (my goal was 12, though). So I didn’t expect to really be able to make it this year. So I’m pleasantly surprised that I was able to make it in approximately six months. So, […]
20 years late to the party. I’m surprisingly out of place.
The Giver (1993) – reviewed 4 times previously (3.75 avg) I love dystopian fiction. Give me a zombie apocalypse or oppressive regime, and I’m happy. Unless we’re talking about really having to live under those circumstances, in which case you can count me out. So The Giver should be right up my alley. Only….well, it’s written for 14 year olds. It’s not that this isn’t a good book, I’m just 20 years too old for it. This book is trimmed of any excess. There’s a […]
