I've been doing this since 2015, and though I'm not going to read a hundred books a year, I plan on doing this for the foreseeable future. I also maintain the Cannonball Read database, and make infrequent updates on our reading habits. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ingres77's Quick Questions interview.)

Comfortable diversion, but the audio version is a must-listen.

*Spoilers follow* I saw the movie How to Train Your Dragon in the theatre, and absolutely fell in love with it. I loved the world, thought the characters were fun and relatable, and was absolutely blown away by the art, but the stand-out for me was the dragon Toothless. But I loved everything. I thought the tumultuous relationship between Hiccup and his father felt authentic, if a little on the absurd side (this is a cartoon, after all), and Hiccup’s role as an outsider felt […]

“Death is never added to death, it multiplies.”

August 23, 2016 by ingres77 4 Comments

I’m not going to review the book too deeply, in anticipation of our discussion. These are just some thoughts I had. I had no idea that Sherman Alexie wrote the screenplay for Smoke Signals. if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend that you do. If you enjoyed this book, I couldn’t recommend that movie enough. It has a similar tone, and touches on some of the same themes. Stylistically, this book could’ve been written by Stephen King. Maybe that’s a weird comparison to make, but […]

Rainbow Rowell is my spirit animal.

August 22, 2016 by ingres77 10 Comments

I am iridescent with joy. I am pregnant with wonder. Gestating within me is the belief that regardless of how much I love the book, if Rainbow Rowell is writing it, I will absolutely love the people she fills it with. When my egg hatches, I will be gifted with the certainty that Rainbow Rowell is my new favorite author. Part of my effervescence, no doubt, is due to the long string of unhappiness in which I’ve enshrouded myself. The Girl on the Train, Cujo, The […]

“Having kids sent a tornado through your marriage, then made you happy at the devastation.”

Prior to joining CBR, I had never heard of Rainbow Rowell. She’s the kind of author I never would’ve encountered out in the cold and barren landscape of the real world. I don’t typically read romance novels or the young adult genre (though this book doesn’t fit into the latter category). Which is weird, because some of my favorite, most beloved movies, are romantic comedies: When Harry Met Sally, Notting Hill, Love Actually (yes, I’m one of THOSE people)…. And I love Disney and Pixar movies, which may […]

There’s almost no way this book could have succeeded. But it mostly does.

I won’t recount all the ways I love the Harry Potter books, but I will say that after having read this, I want to go back and read the series again. Barely a month after finishing it for probably the fifth time. My love for this world, and these characters, is indelible. Needless to say, I highly anticipated Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Don’t mistake my delayed review as lack of enjoyment or diminished excitement – I did everything I could to savor these pages. […]

Shed your tears, for there is no succor here.

August 16, 2016 by ingres77 6 Comments

Spoilers abound. I’ve never before hated such a good book. There was nothing enjoyable in here. It was gross, and full of despair, and unsettling. Reading this was like bathing in a fetid pool of sewage left out in an Arizona summer. I’d rather eat rancid fish than live in this world any longer. I’d sooner spend the rest of my life watching Michael Bay movies than read this book again. Which isn’t to say it’s a bad book. It’s not. It was well written, […]
