In an attempt to stave off the degradation memory has on my ability to write these reviews, I’m going to try doing a better job at making notes for myself while I read them. I haven’t been doing a very good job of that lately. Last year, I discovered the novels of Brent Weeks. Soon thereafter, I abandoned what I had thought was going to be an interesting series because I couldn’t stomach the depiction of the women in the books. They were all beautiful […]
I saw these books described as Zack Morris is space, and now I can’t forget it.
(It’s late, I’m just back from vacation, and this review is nearly 4,500 words. Just to warn you: I’m not proof-reading this.) Earth is small and insignificant. Humanity doesn’t matter. This series is set about a hundred and fifty years in the future. Earth has been forcibly pulled into a vast and cold Galactic Empire, where all the power and decision making exists at the center of the galaxy. Earth is a backwater on the frontier, marking a sharp divergence from typical science fiction, where […]
2nd quarter 2018 stats update!
Now that we’re (more than) halfway through the year, it’s time for the second quarter database update. I’m not going to lie, though, I kind of forgot to do this. That’s the bad thing about not doing this every month, I guess. You kind of get out of the habit of it. And I kind of miss doing the more in-depth posts, but I just don’t have the time for it. Sorry about that, everyone. On with the stats! Monthly review totals: January – 416 […]
I read this, but I’m not sure I could convince anyone.
I had never heard of Dennis E. Taylor prior to reading the first book in his Bobiverse series last year. I enjoyed that book immensely; so much so, in fact, that I think I oversold it in my review. Setting all that aside, though, the series was still a highlight of the year, and I’ll read any future novels he writes in the universe. So, seeing that he’s come out with a new book piqued my interest. I think it’s an Audible-only release, though. The […]
The implacable horror of isolation
There are books that speak to you. Books that reach down into the core of your inner being to play the delicate chords of your heart strings. Books that stay with you, becoming a passenger for life, indelibly connecting you to a particular place and time, like some kind of existential anchor of permanence in a sea of change. Moby Dick is one such book, for me. That book haunts me. It’s the girl I had a crush on in high school but was too afraid […]
The confluence of stupidity and evil incarnate
Between 1968 and 1985, a series of double murders horrified the province of Florence, Italy. These murders have been laid at the feet of Il Mostro di Firenze, The Monster of Florence. Douglas Preston, author of Relic and other novels with his writing partner Lincoln Child, moved to Florence to write a novel, only to find that one of the aforementioned murders happened across the street from his house. Thus began a years long fascination with the serial killer, and the abandonment of his very purpose for […]
