I've been doing this since 2015, and though I'm not going to read a hundred books a year, I plan on doing this for the foreseeable future. I also maintain the Cannonball Read database, and make infrequent updates on our reading habits. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ingres77's Quick Questions interview.)

Sometimes, rarely, you get precisely what you want in life. This is one of those times.

For reasons I can’t fully explain, this book has always held talismanic powers for me. I’ve walked passed it numerous times in the book store, always intending to read it, but never buying it. Until, one day, I did. But then it sat on my shelf unread, collecting dust, and taking up space in a room infrequently visited but never entirely free of my interest. I went on to read other Murakami books, and loved many of them. But Norwegian Wood has been a consistently […]

Welcome to the modern world

December 15, 2018 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

I was in the sixth grade when the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed. I was a little too young to be fully aware of Waco, Ruby Ridge, or the first World Trade Center attack, and, as an army brat, while the first Gulf War affected my family personally, I only really saw it as something that might take my father from me. So the 1995 terrorist attack was the first real event that captured my interest – and not least […]

Nine lost civilizations and one completely mythical city

October 21, 2018 by ingres77 2 Comments

At barely a hundred pages, Lost Civilizations isn’t a hefty tome, by any definition. It’s the kind of book you find in the discount bin at Barnes & Noble. It’s the kind of book my uncle would get me when I was twelve, because he knew I liked history but had no idea which books I had, or which subjects, specifically, I was interested in. Which is fine. There’s a place for those books. But I’m usually looking for more than that. These books were […]

I came for JK Rowling, but I’m staying for the characters

October 21, 2018 by ingres77 2 Comments

This is the fourth book in the Cormoran Strike series, and if you enjoyed the previous three books, I’m guessing you’ll also like this one. At the end of the day, you probably don’t need me to sell this book to you, but it doesn’t disappoint, given all that came before. Lethal White picks up almost immediately after Career of Evil, which ended with Robin marrying her piece of shit boyfriend, Matthew. So we get to spend a good bit of time seeing how that […]

I intended to read all the Star Trek books….and made it through 12 of my planned 46

September 21, 2018 by ingres77 2 Comments

I’ve been a fan of Star Trek since I was a child. The Original Series and the Next Generation were TV staples in my house; I devoured every episode, and watched them numerous times. My enjoyment continued into Deep Space 9, but died with Voyager and Enterprise, before being renewed again with the advent of Netflix, which allowed me to re-watch every episode from every series in the correct order (though, I still think Voyager and Enterprise are fairly weak shows). But until last year, […]

I had a little Blake Crouch marathon

September 1, 2018 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

Dark Matter (4 stars) I was in the midst of a 14 hour car trip when I suddenly realized that I was finished with my book (one in the Undying Mercenaries series) and didn’t have the next one on my phone. Oops. So I got on Libby and downloaded the first book I recognized. And by recognized, I mean I’ve seen the cover a few times on this website. This was a pleasant surprise. The science was just complex enough to make it interesting, but […]
