I've been doing this since 2015, and though I'm not going to read a hundred books a year, I plan on doing this for the foreseeable future. I also maintain the Cannonball Read database, and make infrequent updates on our reading habits. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ingres77's Quick Questions interview.)

RASL (Vol. 1): The Drift by Jeff Smith

August 25, 2019 by ingres77 1 Comment

CBR11 Bingo: Illustrated It needs to be said (because I’ll take every opportunity I can to say it) that Bone is one of my favorite books, and I will never not recommend it to people. When I read comics as a teenager, it was one of the stand-out series being published at the time: creator owned, independently published, with all the writing and art done by one person. And it was beautiful. The writing was charming and endearing, and the art was ambitious, innovative, and […]

Emergency Contact

Angsty, charming, good….and problematic?

Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi

CBR11 Bingo –  Cannonballer Says So, scootsa1000 reviewed this book two months ago, and she could’ve just said, “Hey, Rainbow Rowell says this is the best book she read last year.” That would’ve been enough to get me to read Emergency Contact. Instead, she went on to give a really good review of the book. I suggest reading it. Penny is a freshman in college, and I don’t think she’s ever looked forward to anything in her life as much as she has getting away […]

He was tall, and could fight, and was a smartass…and all the women loved him.

Rebel Fleet by BV Larson

August 17, 2019 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

CBR11 Bingo: Summer read I’ve long struggled with BV Larson. He’s, supposedly, one of the most popular ebook writers, but his books have been….problematic. And this one is no different. Rebel Fleet starts off well enough. Leo Blake, out of the US Navy, is now a beach bum in Hawaii. He stumbles upon a mysterious vessel in the ocean, and is propelled through a series of violent interactions that lead, ultimately, to him joining a vast intergalactic fleet of starships. It gets a little outrageous. […]

Hey look, I did a thing. After eight months….. 2019 STATS!

August 9, 2019 by ingres77 10 Comments

As some of you may have noticed, we’re doing something a little different this year. Namely, I have a new baby in the house (she’s currently mewling at me from her swing, refusing to go to sleep), and don’t have the time for the monthly updates. So I instead wanted to focus on quarterly updates (which I think I did last year). That turned into a half-year update….and here I am in August finally getting around to it. But – and this is the good […]

I had a lot of ideas for this review….and then I waited two weeks to write it.

Recursion by Blake Crouch

July 24, 2019 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

CBR11 Bingo – Science, because this is a science-centered science fiction novel. I should stay on top of these books. By the time I sit down to review them, they’ve already started to fade from my mind. I drove to New York last summer, and used Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter to fill most of the trip. I enjoyed the book enough to pick up his Wayward Pines series (which I didn’t enjoy quite as much). Seeing that he had a new book out, I jumped […]

The Lost World without the racism.

Outland by Dennis E. Taylor

July 5, 2019 by ingres77 2 Comments

Read for CBR Bingo: History/schmistory So, I love science fiction. That’s news to me. When I self-conceptualize, I love fantasy. I grew up on Tolkien and George RR Martin and Robert Jordan. When I was younger and still aspired to be famous and noteworthy, I thought I would be a fantasy novelist. But looking back through the books I’ve read for Cannonball Read, 32% of my reviews have been of science fiction novels (compared to 21% fantasy and 19% history). Anyway. I read Dennis E. […]
