I've been doing this since 2015, and though I'm not going to read a hundred books a year, I plan on doing this for the foreseeable future. I also maintain the Cannonball Read database, and make infrequent updates on our reading habits. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ingres77's Quick Questions interview.)

Dial L for Love

Call Me Maybe by Cara Bastone

November 7, 2020 by ingres77 2 Comments

My wife found this on Audible. It’s included with the membership, so she didn’t need to use one of the credits. As soon as she finished it, she immediately told me that I should give it a try. And, damn. I loved it every bit as much as she did. This is probably the most charming book I’ve read this year, and was certainly one of the more enjoyable ones. I’ve had some tentative forays into romance novels. For years, I brushed off anything that […]

I’ve discovered fanfiction!

Not From Others by FloreatCastellum

September 22, 2020 by ingres77 7 Comments

So, I finally dipped my toe into fanfic. Now that we can review fanfic on here, I couldn’t really think of a reason to not give it a shot. It’s something I’ve long thought about for my favorite franchises: Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings…. But I’ve never actually tried it. And it was both everything I thought it’d be, and so much more. Not From Others is a novel, you guys.  It’s over 130,000 words long, and was published in 2016. I […]

Killing people to save their lives

The Dispatcher by John Scalzi

Murder by Other Means by John Scalzi

September 21, 2020 by ingres77 4 Comments

The Dispatcher (5 stars) This story holds up on re-read. I haven’t read my first review of this audiobook, so it’ll be interesting to see how it lines up, but I do remember liking it the first time I listened to it. First, I think Zachary Quinto needs to narrate more books. He has this marvelously dry voice that is both soothing and unobtrusive. It’s easy to listen to without being boring. And he has a great ear for voices. Second, I will read anything […]

I guess I have a Cannonball – even though most of my reviews are of short stories.

The Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle

Harrison Squared by Daryl Gregory

Apt Pupil by Stephen King

Morality by Stephen King

September 19, 2020 by ingres77 7 Comments

Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle (3.5 stars) Pierre Boulle published two dozen novels in his lifetime – but he is most famous for the semi-autobiographical The Bridge over the River Kwai and this franchise creating science fiction story from 1963. We’re all familiar with the basic story, right? A group of scientists board a ship bound for Betelgeuse (the second brightest star in the constellation of Orion, after Rigel). Due to traveling near the speed of light, centuries pass on Earth. When they […]

Short story review dump (Part V)

The Eyes Have It by Philip K. Dick

The Hanging Stranger by Philip K. Dick

Let Those Who Would by Genevieve Valentine

Mirror by Haruki Murakami

Nightmare at 20,000 Feet by Richard Matheson

This is something new I’m trying this year, where I review short stories as stand alone stories, not part of anthologies or collections. Here are parts I, II, III, and IV. The Eyes Have It by Philip K Dick (3 stars) This is, so I’ve read, the shortest story in Philip K. Dick’s bibliography. And the copyright doesn’t appear to have ever been renewed, so it can easily be found online. Here it is at Project Guttenberg. It tells the story of a man reading […]

Midyear 2020 Stats!

August 4, 2020 by ingres77 11 Comments

Ain’t no party, like a hurricane party ’cause a hurricane party don’t…Yeah, I’m not having a hurricane party. I put the kids to bed, filled my tummy with Wendy’s, and am watching fail videos on Youtube. Close enough, I guess. All is good here (though my kids’ trampoline was ripped from its anchors and rolled over by the wind. The safety netting was damaged, but I was able to force it back into a reasonably normal position). Anyway…This stats update is through the first week […]
