I've been doing this since 2015, and though I'm not going to read a hundred books a year, I plan on doing this for the foreseeable future. I also maintain the Cannonball Read database, and make infrequent updates on our reading habits. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ingres77's Quick Questions interview.)

A Stupendously Traumatic Story of Terrible People

The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey

January 6, 2022 by ingres77 2 Comments

I came across this book when I saw LurkeyTurkey‘s review back in December. Anything being described as “a kick in the teeth” is going to intrigue me, if nothing else. I’m so thankful that this review is spoiler-free, because I went into this book not really knowing anything about it, and I think that was the best way to experience this story. Thanks, LurkeyTurkey! For what it’s worth, synopses I’ve seen of the book give much of it away. So be forewarned. This book takes […]

One of the true highlights of my reading life, and now I can share it with my son!

Bone by Jeff Smith

December 31, 2021 by ingres77 6 Comments

Begun in 1991, Bone is a landmark comic book. Originally published as 55 comic books, the story was eventually gathered together in 9 graphic novels before eventually being bound in one massive 1,300 page volume in 2004. I started reading Bone in the mid-90s, and have read the entire story multiple times. It is one of my favorite books of all time. Earlier this year, my son and I started reading it, and he’s fallen in love with it just as I have. He’s six, […]

A great Christmas read

If the Fates Allow by Rainbow Rowell

December 31, 2021 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

I never would’ve learned about Rainbow Rowell had I not joined Cannonball Read. Hell, I probably wouldn’t have read her if I wasn’t doing the database, and seeing her name pop up more than any other author except Stephen King (432), Neil Gaiman (269), and Robert Galbraith (243) with 238 reviews. You guys absolutely love Rainbow Rowell (average review had 4.3 stars, compared to 3.7 for King, 3.9 for Gaiman, and 4.2 for Galbraith). This love, I feel, is fully deserved. Rainbow Rowell is glorious. […]

Trying to finish up CBR13

The House of M by Brian Michael Bendis

Batman: Knightfall (Vol. 1) by Doug Moench

December 27, 2021 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

House of M (2005) 3/5 stars I don’t follow comics. I used to, when I was a teenager, but that was more than a couple years ago now. I have generally watched the movies, though, and have mostly enjoyed the MCU. Comics have a pretty big nostalgia factor for me, so I’ve frequently “tried” getting back into them, and have had varying degrees of success. In light of that, I’ve always kind of wanted to read Civil War, and was aware of the story-line […]

Act of War: Lyndon Johnson, North Korea, and the Capture of the USS Pueblo by Jack Cheevers

December 23, 2021 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

One thing I love about history is that no matter how much you think you know, there’s always something new to uncover. Such was the case, here. I think I have a pretty good handle on 20th century US history. I’m not an academic, by any means, but I’ve done a fair bit of reading. I’ve either never heard of the USS Pueblo, or had forgotten about it until reading this book. Technically speaking, the Korean War never ended. We were all reminded of this […]

I’m finally done with the Wheel of Time…..

A Memory of Light by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson

December 18, 2021 by ingres77 22 Comments

The Wheel of Time turns, and ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legends fade to myth, and even myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the third age by some, an Age yet to come, an age long past, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning. there are neither beginnings or endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it […]
