World War Z, but with Robots

Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson

March 31, 2022 by ifso Leave a Comment

Hey, did you like Max Brooks’ novel World War Z ? Did you love the structure, the multitude of accounts woven together to form a much larger story of survival? Well, Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson is a fun read but a weak substitute. In brief: sometime in the near future, a sentient AI has taken control of the worlds’ robots and has mostly wiped out humanity. This novel is a concentration of accounts that detail how humans fought back.  It’s only possible to avoid […]

Four words: Possessed Nun Fights Demons

Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson

February 22, 2022 by ifso Leave a Comment

I picked up Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson sort of by accident. I remember thinking the plot and general world sounded interesting. What I didn’t realise until after the fact was that I had read both of Rogerson’s previous novels and really enjoyed them. Of the three, Vespertine is definitely my favourite. Can’t believe I’m saying this, but… Meh.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

January 28, 2022 by ifso 15 Comments

Aw man. I was so excited for this one. It’s been on my wish list since it came out. I haven’t read anything else by Andy Weir, but the reviews were fantastic and the premise was cool.  It’s been a few days since I finished Project Hail Mary, and I’ve been putting off this review, hoping I’d like it more upon reflection. That didn’t happen, and now I’ve got to put it into words. What it boils down to is that the narrator drove me […]

An odd man, his angry daughter, and a religious cat walk into a bar…

The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward

January 15, 2022 by ifso 3 Comments

I originally saw this book recommended on r/horrorlit a couple of months ago, when I was trying to branch out into different genres.  I’m not sure I’d really classify this as horror – psychological fiction might be more apt. It’s better to go into this book with as little information on the plot as possible, so I’ll do my best to keep this review spoiler-free. The basic plot set up: Years ago, a little girl went missing. Her sister is looking for the person responsible, […]
