Looking for a modern-day YA paranormal book that doesn’t involve vampires and werewolves? Anomaly by Tonya Kuper has teens with the ability to bend reality and a good old-fashioned Evil Consortium vs. Tenacious Resistance power struggle, with some pretty kick-ass fight sequences.
Huzzah! Suffragettes!
Courtney Milan has done it again, and this may actually be my favorite book yet by her. Plenty of romance novels have funny moments, but it’s rare that I actually have to set a book down because I’m laughing so hard there are tears streaming down my face. If you’ve spent any time on ladyblogs, you’ll love it too.
3 YA New Releases from Entangled Teen
When people complain that young adult novels have nothing to offer the serious reader, it’s pretty clear to me that they’ve never actually read any YA. These new releases from Entangled Teen deal with issues ranging from human cloning and reproductive coercion to arranged marriages and people who ostracize anyone with “impure” bloodlines. Plus, dragons, because YA can get away with being a lot more fun than some other genres!
Scientists in Love
Sebastian Malheur is one of the most revered naturalists of his day… and one of the most reviled men in England. After all, he gives public lectures about reproduction and genetics and that is simply Not Done in polite company. Imagine how much more scandalous it would be if word got out that his pioneering discoveries about inherited traits were actually made by a woman!
Misfits in Love
One of the comforting things about reading romance novels is knowing that they’re going to have a happy ending. The Heiress Effect was interesting because for a while there, I honestly wasn’t sure whether Jane and Oliver would actually be able to put aside their differences long enough to find their “happily ever after” together.
Defy – New YA Fantasy with a Twist
Sara B. Larson’s Defy tells the story of Alex Hollon, the best fighter on the prince’s royal guard. There’s just one catch, however — Alex is actually Alexa; she and her twin brother Marcel lied about her identity so she could join the army after their parents’ death at the hands of an enemy sorcerer. But Alexa’s true identity may not be as well-concealed as she thinks, and she’s not the only one with secrets.
