Halbs's Reviews:

“The burned hand teaches best.”

November 27, 2015 by Halbs 2 Comments

This is is my second review of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series. You can find my review of The Fellowship of the Ring here. But so our path is laid.’ ‘Yes, that’s so,’ said Sam. ‘And we shouldn’t be here at all, if we’d known more about it before we started. But I suppose it’s often that way. The brave things in the old tales and songs, Mr. Frodo: adventures, as I used to call them. I used to think that they were things […]

Five stars for Kamala; two for this particular book.

November 24, 2015 by Halbs 3 Comments

This rating might surprise even the casual comic reader, as the Kamala Khan version of Ms. Marvel is generally lauded and respected as a fun character and a breath of fresh air. While I would give the charming Kamala (and her dad) five stars, I didn’t enjoy the slow storyline of volume one. I also don’t like the art in the book. Alphona is a definitely talented artist; I simply would’ve chose a different art style for the book (more like this or this). For those unfamiliar […]

Halbs Reads His First Romance Novel

November 23, 2015 by Halbs 4 Comments

With the “Random Acts” series, author Julia Kent has created a Marvel Cinematic Universe of sorts for “romantic comedy with an edge”. From what I can tell, characters move in and out of the books in the series and have interconnected lives. This is a pretty neat idea for a series of romance books. (Since I am not a romance reader, I have no idea if this is normal or not.) This is a review of the first book in the Random series. In Random […]

Play the song of life, write the words that sing.

This review is for the audio version of this book. As a public service announcement, I recommend that you check in with your local library to see if they support OneClickdigital or other apps that let you download audiobooks to your smartphone via library membership. I have listened to a lot of hot bestsellers this way for free! Free! The Little Paris Book Shop is about a lot of things: the love of books, the art of living, courage, delicious food, loyal friends, and second […]

I have listened to a lot of hot bestsellers this way for free! Free! Started from the bottom, now we’re here.

November 7, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

BOOM! Studios has a history of publishing books with amazing premises and sometimes disappointing execution. I have bought at least four of their titles, and three of them have been purchases that I regretted. Freelancers, however, is light-hearted fun from beginning to end. Val and Cassie, like a lot of twenty-somethings, are trying to grow their brand in L.A. Unlike the usual actors, writers, and bloggers, they’re freelance fixers/bodyguards/bounty hunters. It’s a different skillset, but one that they grew up developing. Chapter one lets you […]
