Halbs's Reviews:

Terry loves writing autobiographies!

January 5, 2016 by Halbs Leave a Comment

The title to this book misled me a bit. It sounds like a self-help/relationships/gender studies book, but Manhood is about ninety-five percent Terry Crews memoir, and only about five percent advice about being a good guy. This frustrated me a bit; it felt like a little bit of a bait and switch from the publisher or Crews. Celebrity autobiographies seem more prevalent than I can remember, and they vary widely in quality and readability. While this one was not what I expected, it ultimately did […]

tramps like us, baby, we were born to run

December 30, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

The plan was to review this book as my first CBR8 review, but I simply could not stop turning pages. I had to finish it as soon as possible. My one-sentenc review: Born to Run is a book about will, the human spirit, living well, and sticking to the man. It’s very good and inspiring, but a smidge too hyperbolic to be five stars for me. Born to Run has over 3,100 reviews on Amazon and a 4.5 star rating, so the odds are good […]

The night life ain’t no good life, but it’s my life

December 18, 2015 by Halbs 1 Comment

As a proud and earnest Texian, I see Willie Nelson as one of the state’s greatest offerings. He captures so well so many of the contradictions inherent in the Texas that I love. Willie loves the Lord, his family, music, smoking, and occasionally  kicking some ass.  I love all of those things, and I love Willie Nelson, too. It’s A Long Story is not Willie Nelson’s first book; it’s not even his first autobiography. However, I do think this is the definitive Willie biography. Written […]

Jahan Cross is Back!

December 12, 2015 by Halbs 8 Comments

My review of Volume One of Agent of the Empire is available here. Imperial Agent Jahan Cross is back in Dark Horse’s Hard Targets . Volume one focused largely on the suave, brash, and tortured Cross. It was a fun, if slightly melancholy, spybro story. Volume two is all about Cross the intel man. In this arc, powerful families of Serreno are clawing for power amongst one another and to determine Serreno’s place in the Empire. Cross is sent in to help sort things out. […]

How to find the glory of the cosmos in your TPS reports.

December 11, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I earned my undergraduate degree from a liberal arts school that was Christian. I liked it. It encouraged students to view the world and act in a holistic way. How does faith influence your business ethics? How does faith influence your understanding of the importance of the environment? How does a person’s faith influence political action? We wrestled with a lot of questions like that. One of my favorite courses was called Spiritual Pilgrims. The course encouraged a lot of practices and traditions that at […]

Why Going Shopping on Sundays Makes me Light Fires and Read More

December 7, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This review is for the audio version of this book. As a public service announcement, I recommend that you check in with your local library to see if they support OneClickdigital or other apps that let you download audiobooks to your smartphone via library membership. I have listened to a lot of hot bestsellers this way for free! Free! For years, I have been gaining weight and getting more boring. Finally, I looked in the mirror and was like, “Who is that guy?” Then I […]
