Sgt. Bobbie Draper Ain’t No Fortunate Son in The Expanse (Book Two)!

November 27, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

It’s important to look at the sunny side of life. While I work in a city with an awful commute, I also have the chance to listen to a bunch of audiobooks. Right now I’m working through James S.A. Corey’s series The Expanse. Book one was recently reviewed on this very site, and book two is reviewed here. (For the record, Jefferson Mays’ reading of the books is fun. He does better with the Belter accents than I ever could in my own head.) Whereas book one […]

Expanse Books > Expanse SyFy Show

November 20, 2017 by Halbs 4 Comments

I’ve been an Amazon Prime subscriber for a long time because our family orders so much in the way of baby supplies and dog food. In an attempt to get the most bang for the buck, we’ve dropped Netflix in favor of using Prime Video more. We’ve finally gotten around to watching shows like Justified (now an all-time favorite), and we’ve also enjoyed originals like Red Oaks. One show I didn’t know much about that we found was SyFy’s “The Expanse”. The show is based […]

Not a Gilmore Girls Fan, But I Love Lauren Graham

November 1, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

While my wife and many (most?) of my friends love The Gilmore Girls and/or Parenthood, I’m not a fan of either show. However, I am a huge fan of Lauren Graham. She’s charming, funny, and a heck of a writer. Her novel, Someday, Someday Maybe, is one of my favorites of the last few years, and I highly recommend the audiobook.  Even though Talking as Fast as I Can is written primarily for fans of Graham’s show, I enjoyed the audiobook just to hear Lauren Graham talk […]

“Turning into a mean-eyed lunch-kicker won’t help anything!”

October 27, 2017 by Halbs 3 Comments

In addition to reading for fun and to fight cancer, I’m also doing a book challenge with some work friends. The books we have to read are:  a book published this year  a book published year you were born  a book you’ve been meaning to read  a book recommended by you librarian/bookseller/others doing the challenge  a book you should have read in school  a book chosen for you by a spouse/partner/sibling/child/BFF/others doing the challenge  a book published before you were born  a book that was banned […]

Secondary Characters Get the Spotlight in iZombie 2

October 23, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

The show iZombie is a lot of fun, and the comic is also fun, but different than the show that took its name. Volume one of the comic introduced us to the world of Gwen, the zombie protagonist who has to eat brains to survive. Luckily, she works as a grave digger and has easier access than most to the gray matter goods. Gwen is friends with a 1960s ghost and a nerdy were-terrier (like a werewolf, but cuter).  In volume 2, Gwen takes a […]

Accessible Poetry Bursting with Heart

October 23, 2017 by Halbs 2 Comments

Poetry is something that a lot of us probably want to like, but we just can’t quite get there. Poets either write too much about flowers, or the writing is so opaque and pretentious that it’s pointless to try and decipher. It’s like reading a technical manual on how to fix an industrial HVAC unit – it’s another language entirely. Poetry should be the best of our language. It should sing and kick. It should change the way we view the world around us, even if it’s […]
