Encouraging, Practical, Scientific Parenting Advice

December 22, 2017 by Halbs 1 Comment

I received a free review copy of this book and am offering an impartial review.  As a father of two kids ages three and below, I have read a lot of parenting books, watched a lot of parenting videos, attended a handful of parenting classes, and also temporarily lost all touch with reality. It’s often hard to know what to do to love your kids best. Unfortunately, there’s no parenting manual. Even worse, sometimes credible sources change their minds. Sometimes sources that aren’t credible yell […]

The Unknown Story of America’s First Serial Killer

December 11, 2017 by Halbs 3 Comments

Before Jack the Ripper, there was The Midnight Assassin. He was a serial killer in Austin, Texas, and maybe the first serial killer. He sometimes simply scared women by standing in front of a window, sometimes beat women and went through their clothes, and sometimes killed them. His weapons of choice were iron rods inserted in the ears, an axe swung at the face, and a brick. In the mid-1880s he killed at least five women in Austin, totally changing the mood and even the […]

The Brother Karamehzov

December 11, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

The Brothers Karamazov is a classic novel centering around the Karamazov family. The father is a sensualist, as his eldest son. The middle son is an intellectual, and the youngest son is deeply religious. Due to decades of strained relations, as well as love triangle more complicated than something from Riverdale, the father is murdered. His own son stands accused. It’s the stuff of high drama, and was a bucket list book for me to read. Unfortunately, after four months of reading, I respected but […]

Dangers and Epicness Get Cranked up to 11 in The Expanseverse

December 11, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Reviewing a book in the middle of an ongoing series is difficult. If the reader is unfamiliar with the series, you don’t want to give too much away in case the series sounds interesting. However, how can you discuss even minor plot points and character development unless you talk at least a little about what’s currently happening and who is around to see it? All that to say, this review has some necessary minor spoilers of The Expanse series, but me saying, “The Grand Canyon […]

Is Poison Ivy a Good Guy or a Bad Guy? Yes.

November 30, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I’m such a big, dumb Batman fan that I subscribe to several Bats-related subreddits and Pinterest boards. After playing Batman: Arkham Knight and enjoying its Poison Ivy storyline, I hit the internet boards to find recommendations for Poison Ivy-centric books. One recommendation was this short trade paperback from 1997. It is out of print, although I believe at least a portion of it is in the recently released Batman Arkham: Poison Ivy. Additionally, you can still find used copies of the book on Amazon. That’s […]

Grumpy Love

November 27, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

There are three main things to consider when evaluating a children’s book. First, is it teaching your child the right kind of lesson. Second, how is the art? Third, will you get sick of this book after reading it ten times per day for weeks or months? Bestseller Mother Bruce meets all three criteria for a great children’s book. That’s probably why it’s an NYT bestseller and has a five-star rating on Amazon.  As the title and cover give away, Bruce the bear is not happy […]
