I’ve reviewed Raymond Chandler on CBR. I’ve reviewed X-Men on CBR. I’ve even reviewed comic book noir on CBR. You would think X-Men Noir would be perfect for me. At least, that’s what I thought. After all, the pitch for X-Men Noir is great: Drop the X-Men, and all of their drama, into a gritty mystery from the past. Shuffle the players. Shake it up. See what pours out. Smooth right? Sadly, it ain’t smooth. It’s a kick in the pants. Jean Grey is dead. She […]
Never Give Up!
Longitude is one of the greatest kinds of books – the kind that makes the reader passionate about something I’ve never heard of or previously had an interest in. Not only that, this entertaining non-fiction gem taught me a few major life lessons. The book, as the title implies, is about longitude. Specifically, it is about how the world tried to figure out where in the world they were sailing, literally. Solutions ranged from the practical (reading the stars) to the mystical (using the pain […]
“A man becomes the creature of his uniform.”
I’ll provide two quotations from this book. If you agree with them, you’ll enjoy this book and find it useful. If you don’t agree with them, skip this book! First: Every grown-up man should own a dinner jacket, just as he should own a dark suit, and those who do not prize such old-fashioned values may sanctimoniously decline invitations to any fabulous party people by handsome men and dazzling women with bare shoulders and cleavage. Take your pick of value systems. And: Dress: It’s not […]
“Life is a public performance on the violin, in which you must learn the instrument as you go along.”
I’ve always confused A Room with a View with A Room of One’s Own. I recently reviewed a book about how to understand literature, and it recommended one or both of those two books. I can’t remember which. I’ll read them both! Amazon recently released a free version of A Room with a View, so I downloaded and gave it the old college try. ARWAV, as the kids call it (no they don’t) is clever, cheeky, romantic, and Romantic. I may not be the target audience for the book, but […]
What a Suave Cat
I have never read a Hercule Poirot book, and I have not seen the movie version of this Agatha Christie classic. Thus, this is an untainted review. Let me go ahead and solve the mystery for you – this is a very fun book. It’s especially fun if you get the audio version narrated by Dan Stevens (Downtown Abbey et al.). For the other three of you who haven’t read this bottle episode of a mystery – famous Belgian mystery solver Hercule Poirot is on […]
Halbs Rambles About Poison Ivy
Poison Ivy is a great example of a comic character that can change with the times. Initially, Ivy was a one-dimensional woman. She became this kind of floral sexpot, and a Halloween costume favorite. My understanding of the most recent DC lore is that Ivy is more of a benevolent eco warrior (terrorist?) interested in taking care of planet through whatever means necessary. She has also had a romantic relationship with Harley Quinn. (I got a little bit of that in Paul Dini’s Harley & […]
