There’s a quote early in this book that perfectly summarizes my favorite version of Batman. Lucius Fox to Bruce Wayne: I once tried to talk your father into coming into the business. Told him being a doctor drives you crazy. Whatever you do, people just get sick again. You make no progress. He looked at me for a bit, got real quiet, stern almost. It’s a look I’ve only ever seen once again. And it was in the face of a masked man. Finally, in […]
A Superswing and a Supermiss
J. Michael Straczynski is a decorated comic writer and a personal favorite of mine. One of his original creations, Midnight Nation, was the comic that got me back into comics as an adult. I appreciated his thoughtfulness and insight into how people tick. I was excited when he got to co-write the story to the first Thor MCU movie, and I was a big fan of Superman: Earth One Vol. 1. That book gave us a young Clark Kent, an outsider who wanted to do good but didn’t know […]
The Court of Owls? Who Gives a Hoot? Not Batman!
I’m a big Bat-fan. As I’ve written on here before, I came to the Caped Crusader via Batman: The Animated Series. Fox’ groundbreaking show elevated both the Bat and children’s cartoons to an unexpected level of prestige. This was thanks in large part to Andrea Romano’s voice casting and Bruce Timm’s art style, which more of less influenced DC’s animated shows for two decades. I dialed in my Bat-comic collection through garage sales, trial and error, and word of mouth. Dini is still one of my […]
Lit-Level Comic Writing
While I’m an avid comics reader and a believer in the medium, I guess I’m also guilty of a little bit of self-hate. I can tell because when I first read Tom King’s comics, I thought to myself This guy is too good for comics. That’s a weird thing to say if you think comics are great. I suppose what I was thinking is that King writes with a depth one expects more from an Oscar-nominated screenwriter or a bestselling author. His Batman work has been […]
Unlock Your Inner Wonder Woman in this Encyclopedia of Podcast Topics
Many people may be familiar with social psychologist Amy Cuddy from her famous TED Talk given in 2012. In that talk, she advised people to strike a Wonder Woman pose before big events and opportunities. Her idea was that body language doesn’t impact just how others see us, but also how we see ourselves. As of the time I’m writing this review, the talk has had nearly 46 million views. Pretty popular! As a result of the popularity of the talk, Cuddy wrote a book in […]
“Life you may evade, but Death you shall not.”
Dean Koontz is my man. He writes pop thrillers with interesting characters and a certain panache that I enjoy. In this thriller, for example, he peppers in generous portions of T.S. Eliot. Thus, while the story itself may be somewhat “paint by numbers”, it’s still a lot of fun. In Velocity, Billy Wiles is a stoic and (I assume) handsome barkeep who keeps his cards close to the vest. While he has tended bar at the same place for years, no one knows too much about him. […]
