Do you have a keen imagination and vivid dreams? Is time alone each day as essential to you as food and water? Are you “too shy” or “too sensitive” according to others? Do noise and confusion quickly overwhelm you? If your answers are yes, you may be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). I’m sure you’ve heard of this book. Originally published in the late 90’s, The Highly Sensitive Person is one of the pop pyschology/self-help giants. It’s all about the 20% of humans who process the world, ideas, and medications in […]
Nasty, Brutish, and Short
A Texan myself, I’m a big fan of Larry McMurtry. His most famous book, Lonesome Dove, is of course a classic, both on paper and on screen. The Last Picture Show, in my rural Texas mind, is also a very good book that capture smalltown life so well. I’ve even planned a pilgrimage to Booked Up, McMurtry’s bookstore in Archer City, TX. I say all that to say this: If you loved Lonesome Dove, don’t read this book. That’s my advice. It’s probably not what you’re looking for. […]
What if you mixed Hogwarts and nerds in Nebraska?
Author Rainbow Rowell and audiobook reader Rebecca Lowman knocked another one out of the park with Fangirl. The two have also worked together on the audiobooks for Attachments and Eleanor & Park, both of which I’ve five-starred on this site. Rowell again finds the dramedy sweet spot. Real-world problems and triumphs abound. You root for these characters. Rowell is great, and so is the narration. At this point, three audiobooks in for me, Lowman’s voice is like a warm, cozy blanket by the fire. Max Caulfield, aka […]
A gutpunch of a YA book. Felt like sci-fi, but I guess it’s reality for lots of people.
You would think that I would’ve heard of this book. It’s: A Newbery Honor Book A Coretta Scott King Honor Book A Printz Honor Book Longlisted for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature Winner of the Walter Dean Myers Award Parents’ Choice Gold Award Winner An Entertainment Weekly Best YA Book of 2017 A Vulture Best YA Book of 2017 IIIA Buzzfeed Best YA Book of 2017 But I hadn’t heard of it, or thought about it. And maybe that’s the problem the book is getting at. Jason Reynolds’ Long Way […]
Where Do You Go Oh Oh Oh Oh Eh Oh
The library’s audiobook app knows me so well that it decided to recommend to me Mary Roach’s 2004 bestseller Stiff. A book about cadavers called “Stiff” sounded awesome, almost as awesome as the others book about science and sex called Bonk. With nothing to lose except my ignorance about what happens when I die, I pressed the Check Out button and enjoyed the next eight hours of audio delight. In the book, author Mary Roach saucily quips her way across time and the planet to understand how […]
So Much Plant Butt
3.5/5 stars. The history and breadth of the collection is awesome – you get a lot of bang for the buck. The art is just so embarrassing to carry around I couldn’t give it four stars. That’s my review. As I’ve posted on previous reviews of Ivy-centric books, I kind of fell in love with the morally ambiguous Ivy I first came across in the recent Batman video games. To learn more, I bought this book in the intriguing Batman Arkham series. In this newish series of […]
