Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami

It’s nice to be back at CBR! Last year I went on a reading rampage, tearing through about 90 books (though I didn’t review all of them). This year, I’m taking a more focused approach. I’m intentionally reading more international and female authors in order to expand diversity of thought and experience, and I’m also tackling longer books. I expect to read fewer books, although I still expect a rich year full of growth, thanks to reading and to y’all.  My first book up this […]

“Are you a born writer? Were you put on earth to be a painter, a scientist, an apostle of peace? In the end the question can only be answered by action. Do it or don’t do it.”

Pressfield’s book on pursuing creativity is currently less than $6 in its electronic form, so I used my Christmas money  and picked it up on the recommendation of a creative friend. My buddy owns a coffee shop, plays in bands, and generally pursues the finer things in life. A renaissance man! If he said this was worth a read, I figure it was worth a go. I’m glad I did. While there’s probably nothing groundbreaking in this book, the encouragement to create and be yourself […]

Grumpy Sexy Polish Fantasy

December 17, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Let’s all go into this review with our eyes wide open. I don’t know very much about fantasy beyond Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. That’s the total extent of my knowledge of the genre, unless you count playing Dungeons and Dragons. So, take this review with a grain of salt. My review is that this book series, which spawned great video games and a Netflix show with Henry Cavill in a white beard, is awesome.  Geralt, aka The Witcher, wanders around what […]

“He who knows he has enough is rich.”

December 13, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This year has been a wacky one, to say the least. In the midst of turmoil, I’ve tried to provide myself with a “spiritual roll-cage” to stay alive and reasonably well. A big piece of that has been reading books to nourish the soul. I bought my particular copy of the Tao Te Ching in high school, read it once, and sort of forgot about it. If any year could use some ancient wisdom, it was this one. So, I pulled it off the book […]

Transforming the Mundane to the Magical

December 13, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

While I was not a Bourdain mega-fan prior to his death, I did always appreciate and respect him as someone striving to live an authentic life. He seemed to take a lot of joy out of wandering, and to have little patience for artifice. I like that. Another of his goals seems to have been to get people to veer off of their normally trodden paths and to try something new, just to see what was out there. Even though we’re very different kinds of […]

How to Create Lasting Personal and Social Transformation

December 1, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

As an attorney, one of the most fun things I get to do is put on my “Attorney at Law” persona and advocate on behalf of people being taken advantage of. I get to slap a state bar number at the end of a letter and get people’s attention. Because of that, I think there’s an assumption that I like to fight. In addition to being an attorney, I’m also a mediator, aka “peacemaker”. As a mediator, I try to step into the lives of […]
