8 Keys to End Emotional Eating by Howard Farkas

December 18, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Like many professionals, I have to attend annual continuing education sessions. In one recent session I learned that depression and suicide are many times higher in my field than they are in most others, excluding dentists and doctors. This wasn’t shocking or new to me. What was new was finding out that many students and professionals in my field meet the criteria for diagnosis of various flavors of disordered eating. After thinking about it for a few days, I figured out I was one of those […]

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

November 11, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Adriene Mishler of Yoga with Adriene fame directed me to this book, as it was on her suggested reading list. Because I want to be her I gave it a go. (That’s also how I found the previously-reviewed The Tree of Yoga). In The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz passes along what he refers to as centuries-old Toltec wisdom. I’m not versed enough to know whether or not that is accurate, but I figured if this book has been a best-seller for a decade there […]

Getting to Yes with Yourself: How to Get What You Truly Want by William Ury

October 15, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

William Ury is an icon in the world of negotiation and peacemaking. He is most famous for the business classic Getting to Yes, which he co-wrote with his late mentor and fellow Harvard buddy Roger Fischer. Ury has written several books on his own to further his mission of peace (not a bad goal). One of my personal favorites is The Power of a Positive No, which provides practical advice on how to say no to things while holding on to your values and affirming […]

Monsieur Mediocre: One American Learns the High Art of Being Everyday French by John von Sothen

October 6, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Our library provides free copies of BookPage, which is a great little advert magazine for finding new and upcoming books. I highly recommend it if you’re trying to find something new to shake up your queue. Knowledge of Monsiuer Mediocre came to me via that magazine, and after a few months of waiting for an interlibrary loan to arrive it finally came last week! I’m happy to say this book was worth the wait. Jancee Dunn writes in her blurb on this one, this book is […]

The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky

October 4, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

When I was a freshman in high school I made a new friend that I loved hanging out with. He was unlike anyone I met previously. Any weekend spent at his house led to weeks of stories I could relive of mundane things made memorable. A walk to the gas station for burritos, for example, turned into an odyssey of exploring old train tracks, running from neighborhood dogs, jam sessions, and meeting girls. He was so fun to be around and I felt like an […]

Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor, and Laughter Are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life by James Martin

October 2, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I bought this book last fall at a Jesuit retreat center. The only thing better than lakeside solitude is lakeside solitude with its own bookstore. Mostly, I picked this book for the cute cover. Additional bonus: Richard Rohr of recent enneagram fame and Stephen Colbert wrote the blurbs on the back. In this book, joy is defined as “happiness in God…a deep-seated result of one’s connection to God.” A lot of the book is about how it’s ok for believers to enjoy life. Specifically, how […]
